    Am I missing something?
A car is either a 4x4 or not. Why is that confusing?

You can probably pick up a mitsubishi outlander for that sort of money. My dad has just bought one and it has 2WD, 4WD and 4WD lock settings (not sure of model but can ask).

    These. Nice motor.

Alternatively, if you aren't bothered about the badge and want a small 4x4 that is basically a workhorse you could pick up a brand new Dacia well under budget http://www.mirror.co.uk/lifestyle/motoring/car-reviews/richard-hammond-test-drive-dacia-1778811

Panda 4x4 if you don't want the off road look http://www.fiat.co.uk/panda-4x4

Or a Skoda Yeti 4x4 but i think you'll definately be looking used for one of those.

Note the Dacia and Yeti both come in 2wd format as well as 4x4 so be sure what you are looking at!

And advert saying "Kia Sportage 4x4 2WD" as they mostly are on Autotrader is confusing.. That is why I am asking if I am missing something!!

I think it is the assumption that an SUV should be 4x4, when the reality is rather different.

I think a lot of owners of these pseudo 4x4s which are in reality 2WD will get a surprise come the snow.

Even LandRover are doing 2WD versions of some models these days, which to me means they have been 'neutered'.

It's all about image with LR nowadays with TaTa India being the current owner, and targeting the USA as their No.1 market for SUVs.

Interestingly LR are about to drop the traditional Defender model due to non-compliance with pedestrian safety rules, as well as not enough air-bags.

Better to invest in a decent set of winter tyres and wheels for a regular car IMHO.

Unless of course you actually need the other features of an SUV.

Worth noting that when you are in it, you don't have to actually look at it!

    :D
