Item sold for £250 -Buyer wants to arrange own courier

I've just sold an item on ebay for just over £250 on Saturday my postage + packaging was £35 through courier(2 very large items weigh about 30kg each).
Before the auction ended i had one of the bidders ask me if they could arrange their own courier for the item.
To which i replied Yes, that would be fine (without thinking). Dont know if that was a good idea or not
Buyer has still to pay, Payment options are Paypal, Direct bank transfer or Postal order. Asked the buyer which payment method they would be using but not recieved a reply back yet.
Anyway i was wondering what was the best way to make sure i'm covered if anything were to go wrong after their courier collects. Say for instance the item goes missing, damaged in transit etc.
Any advice welcome please
Thanks

I'd wait for payment to come through. Obviously as the Buyer is arranging own courier he won't pay anything for Postage but if he wants you to package you should ask him for that cost.
When the courier arrives to collect the item ensure you retain all documentation and if possible the tracking number. That way you have all the information you need if it goes 'Missing'.0 -
As they have arranged the delivery any missing damaged items will have to be sorted out by them so no hassle from you.0

If they pay by paypal you need to make sure that there is some way of tracking that they have received it otherwise they could claim it was never delivered.0

Thats the thing though, what if the item did go missing and they cant be bothered with the hassle of dealing with the courier and go for a chargeback through Paypal instead
I'd be out of pocket and no item either, As i couldnt claim from the courier.
I did ask the buyer to use a online trackable courier, But we will see.

If they're arranging transport I'd only accept cash or a bank transfer and would want the funds 100% cleared before allowing the item to be picked up.0

personally for something that is basically being collected I would insist on cleared payment by cheque or bank transfer before collection. Paypal would not be a good idea in these circumstances as you do not hold the contract with the courier and would struggle to prove delivery to paypal's satisfaction should it go wrong.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Second what Blacksheep said - although maybe an e-mail from them confirming they accept that you hold no responcibility regarding delivery or condition of the item as they have decided to use their own courier. If in doubt contact Paypal support and ask them. And make sure a note is added to the account/transaction stating this - customer service at Paypal can do this for you. Personally I'd prefer to get funds by bank transfer however...DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Unfortunately paypal are very strict on their delivery criteria, the only proof of online delivery they accept are here;

Seems i've upset him by asking for another payment method and not PaypalHi there
Please cancel my bid.
I would have used paypal and i wont do a bank transfer. I will also not use
dhl as they damage my sons guitar that i bought him for his birthday. I think
they play football with the parcel. And that was only last week.
You did not say i needed a courier service with tracking on line before i
bid. I think it is fairer for all concerned if we forget this deal.
this is the action i think we should take as we seem to disagree on a few pionts, please do as ebay suggest What if the auction (or Buy It Now listing) has ended? If the listing has ended and you’d like to withdraw from the purchase for any reason, you should explain the situation to your seller and ask them to agree to mutual withdrawal from the sale. If they agree, they can file an Unpaid Item Dispute and state that you both agreed to withdraw from the sale. They’ll then receive a credit for the fees they were charged when you won the item. In addition, as long as they state you both agreed to withdraw from the sale, and you confirm this when asked by eBay, you won't get an Unpaid Item Strike against your account. thanks sorry we have wasted each others time.

Don't take paypal.
Take a payment that is unreversable before you item is picked up.
Explain to buyer that if item goes walkabout during tranist, it's their problem. The money, Dave...0
