What about a part-time job? Might help you get over the fears of having an income and it'll give you time to spend bringing those cars/boats up to a saleable position.
that is what I am thinking. I just said to my wife I might consider shelf stacking a tesco's or somthing, on the night shift - so I could still work on 'my' stuff in the day, and just fit in some sleep whenever I can. As I dont sleep well anyway - it might actually help me if I am that tired ! She (wifey) is worried too about me over doing it - but hey - its drastic debt !!! it needs drastic measures.
you know what though - in the back of my mind, I know that if I was single , with no family - I would sell the lot tomorrow and be debt free. Life - hey !!0 -
If your house is worth 400k then if you got a job earning a average wage 25K youd easily get a big mortgage over about 10 years to pay off the devils debts (credit cards), then you could overpay it at will to mag to grid it. There are prob exit fees and other tie ins that make it not advantageous to pay off your loans early (depending on how flexible they are).
Just think if all this equity you built up and promptly spent over the years had been soundly invested in funds youd be a millionaire and be able to live off teh income to do your boats up and run your cars. Hard lesson to have learntbut at least your facing up to it and not running away and continuing dreaming of tooth fairys and catching lepricorns like rob

I do think the part time job thing is a good idea for the immediate future - it'll help you get over the whole "fear of working" thing, it'll give you cash to sort out the bills like the mortgage and daily living and it'll let you start sorting the debt out long-term, and those assets.
yes, you're right - drastic measures are called for here! good on you for being prepared to do that.0 -
yeah - I used to dream of being a millionaire ! I could have too if I'd have had hind sight !
but the last few years have been good (excepting the ex ! ) and like I said to my wife ' the worst that could happen, is we go back the a 3 bed semi like 'normal' people !
since my divorce - I have slowly come round to being almost 'bhudist' (sp) as in - I could go and live in a cave with nothing but berries to eat. I took up Karate and got my black belt and became very interested in the simple 'pure' way of life, but debts and family were already here. Like I said, if it was just me, it would be easy !0 -
so ....
are you all in debt ? or out of it ? or just like comming one this forum ?
do you all work ?
I am thinking I will have to leave this forum, and just come on once a day or somthing . be very disciplined about it, or I'll never get any work done !
too late for today - the tennents super has kicked in, and I only got 2 hrs sleep this morning !.0 -
Yes, I work! And no, I'm not in debt. But I hang around on this board because there's some brilliant money-saving tips and I can offer advice.
I'm a bit worried about the alcohol thing - my last relationship was with a full-on alcoholic, he was seriously a mess. You're right about not stopping cold turkey but the drinking is not going to solve anything. It's more likely going to make things much worse. Maybe get some help with stopping, give AA a call and see what they can offer in the way of help. It's doing more damage than you think.0 -

I am keeping it under control most days now
as for the cost - I brew my own beer and wine.
sometime I go out for some tennents super - cuz it 'hits the spot'
and yes - I know it is not doing my body, any good at all.
as for going 'cold turkey' I have read - that after drinking alot for a long time, its not a good idea unless medicly supervised (that means - yes , I could die ! ) I think its called the DT's or something, its been a while since I read it. but anyway - on your own, cutting down, is better than 'cold turkey' !
You should really consult your G.P. about this ASAP. There is plenty of help available, and detox can be done safely at home not necessarily within a hospital environment.
You will be prescribed medication, (either chlordiazapoxide or diazepam) short term to be taken several times a day to limit the effects of withdrawal. You will still suffer from sweating and shaking, and feel generally terrible for a while, but you should not suffer the more severe side effects.
You will probably be unable to work during this period and will require the help and support of your family.
Short term it will be very difficult, but think of the long term benefits!0 -
Yep I work and have 125K of debt and starting down investing. Hoping to slowly turn it around, live very simply investing but still having fun and so that i can get to the position where i can do what i want to do, where i want to do it, unfortuantly no matter where you go in the world or what you do you often need money to exchange for goods. A easy simple life is ideal for me too.
My dad had a midlife crisis and bought a ferrari 355, changed his mind, i got it as a graduation present. Spent most of my wage running the damned thing couldnt go out and have fun, I quickly realised that it was a mugs game (my light bulb moment so to speak) so i sold it for 40K bought a house and have been going from there. Now driving a clapped out 500 quid car and all the better for it.
Yep you dont want to spend too much time on forums, i only come on cos often work goes quite slow so read a bit. I think im a bit too quick for my workload/job0 -

i know exactly what harm it is doing ! I have read up on it. I even know the mental / depressing thing it is doing to my head, thats why I am trying to cope with that too.
the other week I sat in my garage thinking about sorting it out so I could work in there, and it was like in the films - devil on one shoulder , angel on the other. I was VERY aware of what I should be doing, but I couldn't get my self off my !!!!! sat on the work mate just sat staring at the mess before me. It was soooo wierd to be so conscious of the mess my head was in , so I linited myself to one drink spread out through the day for a few days so I could snap out of it. it was like a head f..k moment (can I type that ? ) scared me a bit. but at least I know I am still conscious of my debt and drinking and whatever else is !!!!!! in my life, and making the effort to deal with it one thing at a time.
dont know about all at once though !0
