Amex Rewards Gold Card Amazon Voucher

Options
I applied for the Amex rewards card after reading the mse email of 11 September.

It read:

Free £100 Amazon voucher in time for Christmas. The Amex Gold* chargecard gives accepted customers who spend £2,000 on it within 3 mths 20,000bonus reward points - convertible into a £100 Amazon voucher. The pointsarrive as soon as you hit £2,000, so if your normal spending would coverthat, just do it on the card and bingo, free Amazon voucher for Xmas

I am heading along nicely towards the £2,000 target and have just checked the amex website and they only seem to offer £200 vouchers for 40,000 points.

Have they changed the criteria?

I am a bit miffed as none of the other rewards interest me.

I believe you are correct (found the same thing myself recently).

Is there really nothing else that interests you?
Could you not get £100 of Tesco cards and buy your groceries in Tescos.
This is not particularly convenient for me, but I'll go out of may to go to another supermarket to get £100.

I sympathise but I don't think you'll have a leg to stand on as they are almost certainly at liberty to change their rewards scheme so I'd advise you to try to make the best of it.

You can also get £80 credit to your account.
Any of the gift cards do as presents?
Tescos on-line shopping - £12 off code here (min £60 spend).

The last time I looked (which admittedly was a while ago as I always use my MR points for Avios) they did have £100 Amazon gift cards but voucher denominations disappear if they have sold out temporarily - it may return when they restock.

out of stock could be correct as it's still mentioned here

(under reward yourself and 500 points)

    You could call them.
If you do please post up.

Ah I didn't even realise they did Tesco vouchers. They are even easier to spend than Amazon.

    Many thanks

If you're looking for 0.5% cashback the Amex Gold card is pretty much the worst option.

zerog - we are talking about the preferred rewards gold card.
If you spend at least £2000 in 3 months you can get £100 in rewards.
Provided you can use those rewards (and it includes stores like tescos that sell and deliver groceries), then that's a 5% return for that spending.

You can also get some free airport lounge access and other benefits.

Of course you need to cancel the card eventually because there is a £125 charge, but that shouldn't be too hard if you have a diary.

You need to make sure you apply for the correct card.

I've just passed the £2K limit, logged in to redeem my points and Tesco seems to have disappeared altogether !??!

I took £90 cash as I found I couldn't use any vouchers. Took only aa few days to get credited.
I was quite happy with £90 (4.5%) plus the airport lounge access.

Obviously £100 would be better, but I'm pretty sure they would have the right to alter the rewards so I don't think there would be valid grounds for a complaint I'm afraid.
  • Do you travel at all? If you do then moving points to Avios or Virgin Atlantic etc is going to give you a much better value per MR than converting to vouchers
