Dentits and NHS

Quentin,
as my colleagues have reiterated, the NHS is full of bureaucratic problems. If managers were dismissed with immediate effect things would be more beneficial for patients.
However managers feel they need to justify themselves and it seems they have no real skill and are a complete burden on the tax payer.
Now Quentin please have a long hard look at yourself.0 -
I keep pointing out to all you dentists posting here about how awful the NHS is that you aren't assisting the OP.
Presumably she by now has taken on board the advice on her problem and moved on.
Your rants about the NHS should be posted on the rant forum for a wider discussion, rather than seemingly (and now rudely) passing comments at me!0 -
My dentist has his own private plane.
I'll leave it there!0 -
Quentin, are you so inept that your vendetta against dentists defies all logic?
How do you know that the patient has not failed an appointment?
If this happens in our area and the patient fails to make contact within a week the referral gets bounced back.0 -
Do all dentists resort to personal jibes like this or just the ones that post here?
Like everyone I can only take what the op has said in her posts asking for help.
Though had the referral been bounced back in the manner you now have come up with surely her dentist would have told her?0 -
Yes, you get paid on the piece work system. You are normally self employed.
But are you telling us that the NHS rates aren't calculated so that your piece work rates don't include extra money for other non clinical work?
If not, how do NHS only practices survive?
You seem to be agreeing with your colleague dentist that as the dentist doesn't get paid for dealing with a complaint so we shouldn't take up their fee earning time by complaining to them????
(But how does all this assist the OP?)
Not sure how you came to that conclusion. I didn't say complaints should not be dealt with. All I have said is that if they dentist has done what they are meant to have done then I don't see why they should be complained against. And again NO we are not paid in the way you indicate. We are paid for courses of treatment and the single item that falls in a higher band dictates the course. Thus if someone needs 20 extractions its a band 2. If someone needs 20 extractions and 1 crown its a band 3, if someone needs 1 extraction it is still a band 2 and if someone needs 1 crown its a band 3. Simples! So no funding in place to account for the admin side. There frequently isn't enough funding to cover all the costs of the actual treatment. How do they stay afloat? Private work, cutting costs on materials, keeping a closed list of maintained patients, all of the above.0 -

Ooh, yes! Let's all make incredible assumptions about people based on their hobbies.
Do you realise how ridiculous you sound? This isn't primary school.0 -

Quentin,
NHS managers patronise Doctors and Dentists on a daily basis.
They are a complete burden, not a solution.0 -
Thank you for all the replies and comments. I can see the topic has taken a twist but I'm glad it happened after I was given the advice I needed.
I sort of agree with both users that have been commenting on this topic the most.
If the dentist has done his/her job, it is a waste of time complaining them.
On the other hand, there doesn't seem to be a practical way to deal with the situation and when you don't really understand what is going on you feel that complaining both sides probably is the most effective way as I have called my dentist many times and every time they said that they sent the referral;however there were no additional help from them, I would have expected them to give me some advice on how to escalate this situation but nothing happened.
Yes I live in manchester and this is the number that I've called (don't know if is NHS/or oral surgery as some have suggested): 0161 627 7496. They've said that they contacted my practice and asked for the referral again and if I don't hear from NHS in two weeks (I've to wait two weeks more) I should give them a call.
However I'm going to go to my dentist and ask for copies of my letter and get ready a complaint, if I am asked to wait again then I'll send complaints to both or only NHS(depending if I get the copies from my dentist).0
