"Hoist with your own petard" - It's an explosive device - it literally means "to accidentally blow oneself up with your own bomb".
Interestingly, in French the word "peter" means to fart! - Surely the words are connected:D
(ps - peter should have an e with an acute accent - how do you type that in a post?)2014 Losses - Front Door Key, Premier League, Luis Suarez0 -

Does that relate to LaPetamain I wonder - the French act who used to fart on stage - as part of his act I mean:

He was certainly hoisted by his own petard I guess
Blu XI am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apology
THIS IS ME!

One of the favourite things my French grandmother used to cook were pets de nonne - nun's farts- small sugared beignets or doughnuts. Thanks to all who post comps!0

Petard comes from the Middle French peter, to break wind, from pet expulsion of intestinal gas, from the Latin peditus, past participle of pedere, to break wind, akin to the Greek bdein, to break wind (Merriam-Webster). Petard is a modern French word, meaning a firecracker (it is the basis for the word for firecracker in several other European languages).
A petard was a small bomb used to blow up gates and walls when breaching fortifications, of French origin and dating back to the sixteenth century. A typical petard was a conical or rectangular metal object containing 2–3 kg (5 or 6 pounds) of gunpowder, with a slow match as a fuse.

What IF.....................promoters of comps saw you on TV and decided to automatically ban your name from any of their competitions? I mean, it's unlikely but possible I suppose. Especially if you say you win lots from them but don't actually buy their product.
Who was it on here that bought about a million Magnums and stood at the supermarket checkout pulling out the sticks with codes on and giving the ice cream away? :rotfl: I mean, to us it doesn't seem that bonkers but would you want it on TV?
Or, how about "So, why are you up at 4am surrounded by a mountain of KitKats and endlessly clicking on a virtual Jelly Belly fruit machine?""
There is NO WAY that you can have a programme about compers where we come out looking "normal".Living with Lupus is like juggling with butterflies0 -
I was thinking the same thing purplebutterfly
Even though at times us compers can be somewhat "crazy" and I'm guilty, it's still not going to be that interesting unless they exaggerate to extremes meaning stigma attached and some companies taking note.0
