I would recommed the Samsung Galaxy Fame. It's very much like the Ace, but with more rounded corners and there's 4GB of internal memory, so If you are downloading apps, you shouldn't suffer from lack of memory space, which is what the Ace is known for.

My daughter has one of these and loves it.

A while ago my work Blackberry died while I was in London for a couple of weeks. I needed a replacement phone quickly so I bought an HTC Radar PAYG on the same network, vodaphone, from the carphone warehouse. It was £99 at the time.

It was only a temporary solution but I have to say that I was impressed. It did all the usual stuff and did it very well. It's also small and neat and has decent battery life. I now keep it as a backup phone.

cheers, i phone is a possibility but i've never had apple anything before so not sure how i would find it?
had a look on carphone warehouse sim free phones, the following stood out:
    -huiwai ascend y300
    -nokia lumia 520
-samsung galaxy s3 mini (like the fact its a good phone but smaller version although a bit more than my original budget)
any thoughts on these, is the galaxy worth extra?
a friend was also complaining about the galaxy ace so i think i'll avoid that one
Do NOT go for the Nokia Lumia.

I have a Nokia Lumia 520 and I'm really pleased with it. It has a 4" screen which is big enough without being too large, and the battery easily sees me through the day. The interface is quick to use and not laggy at all, and the camera produces better photos than my Canon compact camera! Only a couple of gripes: no compass and no flash for the camera, but seeing as this is the base model I'm not complaining. I have often wondered why people pay lots more for a higher spec Lumia when this one is so good.
    Nooooooooooo!

My work rolled out Nokia Lumia 520s, and nobody has said that they like them. They are really cheap and horrible. A number of people (including me) have spent their own money getting iPhones to use instead. (I got a s/h iPhone 4 for around the £100 mark, and it is way better.)

The Motorola Razr i sounds perfect for you.It has a 4.3 screen but the overall dimensions of the phone are no more than your average 4".
It's £159 sim free from 3 ( that includes a £10 payg 3 sim but you don't have to use it)
It's a fabulous phone....can't be many left now though

    +1 for the Razr

I upgraded from a wildfire to the Razr I.

Great phone, good battery life, very durable, good screen. Only downside for me is no FM radio.

Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p

  • Slightly more than you wanted to pay but a top phone: galaxy S3

or for £150 ish, the galaxy S3 mini
  • If you are happy with the phone why change it?
A new battery with more than double the capacity of the original will cost you less than £5.
A 32GB micro SD card which should be more than enough storage can be bought for about £10.
Manage the phones features to reduce battery consumption, eg turn of GPS, Bluetooth, sync, mobile data when not needed. Reducing screen brightness slightly can have a big effect on battery life.
Always use a mains charger not USB via a computer to charge the battery.

its just old now and slow, been dropped a few times as well. i dont want bigger than 4" screen. is it true with an iphone, if for example the battery fails you have to send it away for repair? i'd rather be able to change small parts like that myself. also i have an old sim card the bigger size, so are there any phones above which wont take this?

Most of them won't.Most take nano sims these days but it's no big deal, you can cut a sim card down quite easily

Although you might reasonably expect the S3 Mini is a smaller version of the S3, the two phones are unrelated as the S3 Mini has budget hardware which is completely different to the S3.

On paper the S3 Mini's hardware is behind the older Galaxy S2 although in practice it's not a bad little device. My Mum bought one as she wanted a smaller phone and has been very pleased with it, the device is quick and responsive in use despite the hardware and batterylife is good for the type of device.
