Forthill Farm, 80 Ballymore Road, Tandragee is one of the best farm shops we've ever been to. Really helpful and pleasant folks. Their free range eggs are superb and the beef was to die for.
I've no connection other than being a really satisfied customer.

I know this place. I bought some of their stuff at a market. The marbling in the beef is like something from a Michaelangelo statue - beautiful. I'll tell you something else. We bought steak sausages from them, really thick ones they were. The lady advised us they were 100% steak. They were so hard to eat because they were so filling. It's not like an ordinary sausage you buy from a butcher's, each one is like a meal on its own.

They keep a herd of particularly rare animals don't they?

Scores on the doors - that's paperwork/systems. Have a look around next time you're there. Watch where the raw meat goes. Watch the money being handled, hands being washed, where ladies leave their handbags etc. Lots of people end up walking round the market with raw meat about them. Not blaming the sellers.

That's how it was when I was growing up but it never did me, or anyone I knew, any harm. That was in the days when carcasses hung in the butchers shop and people leaned against them, brushed against them etc.

The Meat Centre has done it again for me. I asked for a large chicken, stuffed for Christmas. They got me an 11lb bird. Stuffed and all it cost me £20 and I can tell you it was the most delicious chicken we've ever tasted. They've contributed to what is possibly the best Christmas we've ever had.

OK everyone - have not been into McCartney's for years, nor the Meat Centre, do use Hannon's esp for their ham shanks/ends, for a couple of pound well boiled, pulled then roasted - yummy.

Waringstown and Magheralin/Maralin (latter great for BBQ stuff)

Another local and good butchers is WJ Holmes and Son, Donaghcloney. The original Mr Holmes started this business when I was a child, his son and grandsons now run the shop. Again very small on space and in some ways people would say limited in stock but again what you ask for they will go in the back and chop. ( I like my steaks marbled and battered i.e. tenderised) Pies also cooked on the premises.

    Happy Hunting!!

  • I thought I should register on here to post a reply to this thread.

Firstly, I think it only right to say that I count myself as a good friend of the Kennedy family, in particularly Dean who you may come across behind the counter.

We have been using The Meat Centre for just over 7 years, since we moved into the village, and it has never let us down. Dean has become a very good friend and will do whatever you need them to do.

They make everything, barring black pudding etc, themselves with Sally (the mum) responsibility for the pies, lasagne, sausage rolls etc. Dean's brother (Daryl) makes the sausages. They will even do special orders should you wish to get creative.

I have a keen interest in smoking meats and have on numerous occasions put in some less obvious/normal requests. Dean never lets me down and always provides good advice.

We did try McCartneys but the combination of quality product and service from The Meat Centre means we buy everything from them. McCartneys do have a decent cafe and deli which seems to be their main focus now, rather than the raw meat.

They are very traditional in all the best ways and will be able to meet (good pun!!) any requirements you have.

As I said, I am friendly with the family so obviously biased. McCartneys and Hannon's still have their place - Hannon's for bulk purchases (although you will get this from the Meat Centre if you ask) and McCartneys does an excellent job of diverting the less discerning customers away from The Meat Centre so the rest of us can get served quicker.

The only down side is (not really a downside) it can sometimes take a long time to get out of The Meat Centre by the time you catch up on the gossip from the village :D

My personal highlights and recommendations in The Meat Centre are:
Orlando Chicken (slightly spicy/cajun marinated chicken)
Sausage rolls (not good if you are on a diet)
Pork, honey and mustard sausages (the best you'll get anywhere - much better than McCartneys)
    Cut to order steaks

Go in and try them ..... say that Spanky set ya :rotfl:

Yes a thumbs up for William Holmes, quality butcher, could do with more space though.

I went into the Meat Centre in Moira and came away with £140 worth of meat and deli.

The sausage rolls are heavenly. I don't know when I've ever tasted anything to match them. The vegetable roll had us in pure ecstasy.

*Edit* I haven't been given permission to leave comments here by the governing clique so I've reduced them to basics and won't be posting again. Will you all leave me alone now?
  • I call BS on this thread - all these new posters writing 500 words about a bloody butchers!

If they were that good why do they need to have people coming on here and advertising them!!!
