They are not in the village. They are down the old kilmore road (assuming my learning of road names round here is right), in an industrial estate. I didn't know that they sold direct, I assumed they were a wholesaler.

Yes, they sell to joe public - ideal for packing your freezer out, top quality from what i`ve heard.

only thing i`d say is defrosted meat doesn`t seem as good to me as fresh, or is it me -

    any comment on that?

Yes I know where that is. Must check it out.

I'd agree with that ok but for convenience we find it better to buy in advance and freeze. Meat wouldn't keep properly for more than two or three days even in the fridge. I suppose like most people we prefer to do at least a couple of weeks worth of shopping at the same time and only do wee bits through the week. Cutting down the journeys we've got to make to the shops. We're pretty rural so have at least a 4 mile journey to the nearest supermarket of any size.

I went back to the Meat Centre yesterday and to my surprise and delight was greeted like a long lost friend. The same butcher served me and remembered my name. The wee woman who owns the place came out from behind the counter for a chat too.

I spent roughly the same amount of money again, about £60, which when you consider it isn't really a lot to spend in a butchers but I wasn't buying expensive steak and suchlike, just the basics for normal meals at home and trying a few of their own pies and bakes.

Once again the butcher carried my bags to the car although I was on my own this time having left herself at home to go to a meeting in town.

Once again a very pleasant wee trip and with any luck the stuff I bought yesterday will taste just as good as the other stuff we tried over the last few weeks.

Two surprises: it turns out one of my brothers is a customer too and.... several people have been in as a result of this thread and said so. I didn't quiz them about that, they volunteered the information.

I've got to post more info.

The other day we had more of the vegetable roll from the Meat Centre. It definitely is the best we've ever tasted and we have decided that we will only buy it there from now on.

We also had portions of the chicken and brocolli bake we bought and stuck in the freezer. In our opinion it was superb and we can't wait to buy more.

Last week we had lasagne from them. Same thing, same opinion.

As I've kept saying all the way through this thread: I don't think I've ever tasted better stuff from any butcher in my life. Of course that's only my opinion. Others may have tasted as good or better elsewhere and if they have I think you should let us all know.

you do realise you keep telling everyone the contents of your fridge ,which is slightly better than the contents off your wash basket.

Honestly it's hard to beat Hillstown Farm Shop.

    http://www.hillstownfarmshop.com/

I come from a family of farmers and butchers and I have to say their beef and pork is out of this world.

All the beef, pork and poultry is reared onsite.

They have a stall in St George's market for all the Belfast people.

My father really knows his beef (exFarmer/Butcher) and he says this is the best meat out there. He was really impressed with the staff in the farm shop and thought they were more than helpful when it came to particular cuts.

Just look at the food miles

    Gammons-0 miles
    -Turkeys,geese,ducks -1 mile
-Beef and lamb from our farm to abbatoir to the shop- 14 miles
-Pork from farm to abbatoir to shop-8 miles
-Our free range chicken from farm to abbatoir to shop-18 miles
    -Milk- 7 miles
    -Honey -7 miles
    -Buns and cakes- 2 miles
    -Cheese-22 miles
    -This years turkeys,geese and ducks-3miles
    -Potatoes-2 miles
    -Free Range Eggs- 20 yards!!

Randalstown is a bit far for us. Especially when we've found such good produce almost on our doorstep. :) If people up that way haven't heard of Hillstown Farm Shop maybe they should give it a try. I know some people will travel for miles to find good stuff. Somebody further back in the thread also mentioned Hannon Meats on the Old Kilmore Road in Moira and my barber was also talking about buying bulk from there.

Get as many places as possible on here then all Northern Irish MSEer's will eventually become fat on the produce from various butchers and farm shops.

They have a stall in St George's and look to be opening up an online shop.

I hope they continue to do well. Definitively the best butchers I've tried.
