according to the MS chiefs shortly after the vista release their eventual goal is to have a new OS release every year. Wouldn't that be a great money spinner?

Do you have a source for that? I've not heard of that, I knew about the Vienna and Vista SP1 and gave sources for those accordingly, so it surprises me I've not come across that annual release claim.

Well why not, they've copied off Apple in the past, just as Apple have copied off Microsoft and OS/2 and Acorn. If something is innovative and proves to be good then it's bound to be adopted by others and Apple is certainly no stranger to that. I know MS get a real bashing about not being inventive and stealing everyone's ideas but Apple hasn't exactly come up with much either. I used to be an Acorn user and so many "new" ideas in Mac OS looked pretty familiar to me.

Ahh the acorn... reminds me of school!

I can't find the article, but i'm sure it was on the register near the time of vistas release. Some MS bigwig talking about yearly OS releases because otherwise "we would be left behind" (subtle hint to OS-X I think).

Edit: Nearest thing I could find. Although in this case, "Windows release" also includes MCEs

As far as an SP1 goes we have been advised that there will not be one. The service packs were only released for XP

In that case DO NOT BUY VISTA.

You didn't read my posts then that SP1 for Vista will be released this year, and I've even given a link.

I just don't think it'll work, the market couldn't absorb annual OSes from MS. I think if they tried it they'd back off after realising it wasn't working. Also I seriously doubt their development capability of such a quick turnaround.

As for Acorns, RISC OS is still my favourite OS. Just in case anyone thinks I'm a MS fanboy or something. It was so much easier to use and impossible to get corrupted.

    Read this: http://www.itweek.co.uk/computeractive/features/2191658/vista?page=2

VISTA. Take advantage of US prices
As has been reported in Computeractive and elsewhere, Vista can be a lot cheaper in other countries than in Britain. We asked Microsoft if it objected towards buying from abroad, which told us that there’s no reason not to buy your copy of Vista while on holiday in the USA.

Just to chuck in my own experience of it. I'd double and triple check any/all existing hardware you'll be transferring works on Vista.

I work in IT support, and we've just had a client very upset after he bought a Vista PC and his existing all-in-one printer (which says it doesn't need additional drivers and is natively supported in Vista (according to the website)), doesn't work.
At that point, HP have washed their hands of the printer and said it should work, but they don't support it on Vista.

Microsoft Office 2003 is meant to work on Vista. It kinda does, but on putting it on two Vista pcs I've already found a bug related to the stupid "do you accept the license agreement?" nag screen coming up repeatedly no matter how many times you accept it. A resolution for that one is available online.

I'm not overly impressed with Vista thus far. It doesn't support half the devices XP did.
Whoever mentioned 64 bit versions should note that a lot of preinstalled versions of Vista are 32-bit. No-one is going to bother reloading it to go from 32-bit to 64bit, as 64-bit Vista hardware support is even worse.
