in Water bills
I don't understand how it is so expensive? Unlike electricy and gas I can not change to a tariff without a standing charge so low users seam to pay over the odds. Doesn't seam right at all

You could always have a water meter fitted so that you only pay for the water you use.0

Do you have a water meter?
We pay less for water over 6 months than we do for a month's worth of gas and electricity.0 -
i have got a meter fitted. i'm out most of the day everyday and I shower at work and use a dishwasher. still its about 260 a year0

As you say it falls out of the sky so all you've got to do it catch it & store it with sufficient capacity for the summer when it doesn't rain.
Not sure I'd want to drink it though but it's fine for flushing the loo, washing the car and watering the garden. If you were a bit dedicated then I'm sure you could filter it a bit and use it for washing your clothing etc.
An alternative is to install a bore-hole and abstract your own from under the ground, but again by the time you've paid for the hole, the pumps etc and filtering, and possibly an abstraction licence it probably won't work out all that much cheaper and it's all down to you to sort out if it goes wrong.
You'd also have to find some way of disposing of the waste - the stuff from washing etc is fine, you could water the garden with it.
It's what come from the loo that's a bit more of a problem - it's not insurmountable but unless you can find somewhere to dump it you'll have to find somewhere to store it until someone comes to take it away - presumably at a cost.
However if you can't be bothered to do all that then I'm afraid you'll have to pay for fresh clean water delivered right to your tap all day every day and for all the waste to be taken away with no effort whatsoever on your part.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

260 a year and this is your most expensive bill?? It's a bit more than ours, but I don't think it's unreasonable. Surely your gas and electricity is more than that???0 -
In one of our houses we had a private spring but still had reduced water rates to pay - they have to do something to what comes out of your toilet before you can drink it again.0

I think its unreasonable for my consumption, it is my highest bill but I do have a wood burner and go on holiday for 2 months every winter.
I know they have to do stuff with it but still seams like far less work than the electric or gas work.0 -
It's not even £22 a month!! I think it's a bargain for the benefit of having the luxury of opening a tap and clean water just comes out, rather than waiting for it to fall from the sky. Never mind the fact that they get rid of all your sewage for you too...0

Your bill is about double mine and I'm in the South East. I shower at the gym most days and run my washing machine no more than twice a week. I can't really think what else uses water....
I always wonder what other people are doing with it!Sealed Pot Challenge #239

Perhaps a trip to a water treatment plant might help you understand what goes on to get your water nice and clean when you consider what goes inNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
