Do you suggest i keep both parts in my glovebox, along with all my paperwork - MOT certificate & crucially - the V5C?

If i ever needed to produce both parts, i'm sure i'd be given some sort of timeframe producer. I'm not about to start carrying it all around with me wherever i go.

Going slight off-topic, I too don't carry my driving licence around with me, as it's something else to loose. It's not a legal requirement, and am happy to take them to a police station if required, 7 days is plenty of time to do so.

To verify who I am, I carry an out of date university ID, which has my name, photo and signature, which should be sufficient.

So what would you do if you were going on a fortnights holiday in Scotland if you lived in the South of England?

Go to a police station in Scotland and explain the situation and make sure your visit is recorded.

This scenario is more of a worry:

What would you do if you were going to the airport on a fortnights holiday in USA if you lived in the South of England?

    I wonder what's more likely.

    The above being an inconvenience.

Or keeping all documents in my car & it being stolen & then losing all the documents.

I'd dare bet the latter, which would be more of an inconvenience than the first imo.

If you're given a 'producer' whilst on holiday and explain the situation nicely to the PC they might just give you some extra time instead of the standard 7 days.

If it's not reasonably practical to produce your licence within 7 days then you don't commit an offence, so long as you produce it as soon as it is reasonably practical (RTA s164 8b).

Out of curiousity, can anybody explain the point of providing the police with official driving licence counterparts, MOT test certificates or car insurance certificates? Surely all of this data is stored electronically in a way that the police are able to check? Insurance certificates are particularly pointless as you could still have one even after cancelling the insurance.

Trouble is anyone steals the car has the docs to prove they own it!!

Surely a current photocard driving licence would be a rather more respected and therefore useful form of ID, which also helpfully has your address on it.
