If a traffic police officer asks for you to produce your licence the plastic part is no good without the other bit.

But it can save you a lot of hassle as he tries to determine who the hell you are.

There's enough information on the card for Plod to do some very simple enquiries.

The green paper part, I think is called 'counter foil' or something.

It's called the 'counterpart'. There is a big box labelled 'Endorsements' where any points will be listed.

That's true. I used to park in a side street near Southampton University, close to some industrial units. One evening after work I was sitting in my car waiting for the blower to clear the windscreen when a police car pulled in facing me. They thought I looked suspicious parked there, and there had been some recent break-ins apparently. I'm sure handing them my driving licence photocard speeded up the process of convincing them I wasn't up to no good.

Carrying your licence in your wallet is a waste of time unless you just want to use it as a form of photo ID.

If a traffic police officer asks for you to produce your licence the plastic part is no good without the other bit.
Do you suggest i keep both parts in my glovebox, along with all my paperwork - MOT certificate & crucially - the V5C?

If i ever needed to produce both parts, i'm sure i'd be given some sort of timeframe producer. I'm not about to start carrying it all around with me wherever i go.

    No, definitely not.

You would have seven days to produce it at a police station - but the police can check any of the details over the radio at any time. I carry my photocard in my wallet, but the rest is all in a file box at home.

    Fixed that for you.

If you don't have the docs with you (for either you and/or the car) you have got 7 days to go home to get them - not always possible.

Here you go - straight from gov.uk - rules for drivers.

Production of documents. You MUST be able to produce your driving licence and counterpart, a valid insurance certificate and (if appropriate) a valid MOT certificate, when requested by a police officer. If you cannot do this you may be asked to take them to a police station within seven days.
    Law RTA 1988 sects 164 & 165

I carry all the docs mentioned only when I travel outside the UK - and/or if I'm going to be away from home in the UK for more than 7 days. For me that means that I do carry them pretty much all the time.

We in the UK don't seem to take kindly to carrying documents unlike all other European Countries and most others world wide.

With all the computer electrickery in polizei cars these days they know pretty much all about the vehicles status before they ever stop you.

I have twice in the last 6 years been asked to produce my Driving Licence and the other stuff, and was told by the officers that both parts of the licence were necessary - one part without the other was no good.
