£15 a week if I use the trail bike, £20 a week if I use the road bike, about the same if I use the car. I'm on quite a small salary, but that is all affordable.
Heating the house used to be a massive issue. We have oil-fired CH, and we used to fill the oil take 2-3 times a year at about £800 a pop. Two years ago, we had the whole house double-glazed, doubled the roof insulation, and had a new condensing boiler fitted. We've used less than half a tank of oil since March. That's a big win.
Energy prices are based on world prices, and there's not a lot anyone can do about that. Rather than make impractical soundbites about capping energy prices, it would be better for the Govt to help everyone to insulate their homes and have efficient heating, so that we just use less. As others have said, all these resources are finite, and we need to make the most of them.If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
£90 per month @ 18 mpg- good job work is 3 miles away and I park for free!
Home fuel used to cost £84 pm but has now gone up to £110. I don't have double glazing so my heat loss is huge. However, just this week I have bought and installed-

and I have instantly noticed the difference- there is no draft coming through the windows and there is no drop in temperature when I hold my hand a few inches away from the glass with the film over them.
Hopefully It will save me some money and keep the heat in so I can keep feeding the car the jungle juice it loves so much.0 -
The question is wrong.
It isn't all about the FUEL costs. It's about Depreciation, maintenance and repairs, insurance, tax and Fuel.
I'll give you 2 scenarios :
1) Deisel car costs 10K second hand and looses £1.5K a year, in depreciation, costs an extra 200 in insurance, planned servicing costs £200 a year more, tyres are £250 more (for 4) but the fuel use saves £1.8K a year, over scenario 2
2) Bargain Petrol Barge, has £100 depreciation a year, but uses more fuel.
Over a 3 year period the cost per mile is almost the same.
Anyway. I spend £150 a month just getting to work on diesel.0 -

Thats down to a whole host of reasons, predominantly the prevalence of finance.
More recently though the governments scrappage scheme took a massive amount of old cars off the road, replacing them with cheap new ones.
But yes, depreciation is the biggest single cost of car ownership.0 -
one thing i have noticed is how few people car share these days.
Back in the 90s it just seemed natural to share the journey to work with others.
Nowadays it seems to be very much the exception.0 -
I could probably get to work and back on £25 of fuel a month as it is only a few miles round trip. I usually use £20 a week with all my other driving though. Parking is free and my car is 12 years old so no depreciation.0

£20 per week. 24miles per day. Its not too bad as my overall petrol costs for the month is usually about £130.0

But yes, depreciation is the biggest single cost of car ownership.
As Prophet of Doom said above, this does of course rather depend how old the car is, plus the annual mileage. I spend more on fuel than is lost in depreciation (driving ~10,000 miles a year in an economical 8 year old car).0 -
I'm lucky enough to work at the same pace as my wife so we only have one set of commuting costs which is about a gallon of diesel a day if we use her car, a bit more than a gallon and a half if we use mine or two and a half gallons if we use the Land Rover... which we don't very often.
Public transport is not really an option as the earliest we can get to work using the bus is 11:10 and we would have to leave at 15.50 in order to get home the same day.0 -
I must be an MP...Who knew...lol
I spend roughly about a 100 pounds a week on diesel.....
fortunatly i'm in a role that covers travel expenses, because i have to travel to client locations 90% of the time.
My average yearly milage is between 25/30K.....and i spend close on 6K on diesel.....
All i can say is...thank eff for expenses.....0
