The point is the relative costs of car fuel and domestic energy bills, as a guide to what government priorities should perhaps be. This is independent of income.

But it's like comparing apples to oranges.

If someone were to be running their own petrol / diesel generator .i can see the lpoint of comparing them.

It's like asking someone how much they spend on their water, and comparing it to how much they spend on getting !!!!ed down the pub, and then using it to say tax on beer should be lower.

Not if you buy the argument that travel to work and domestic energy use are essentials it isn't ;). Although some would argue trips to the pub are essential as well of course!
  • I have a diesel car and only drive to work 2/3 times a week (work part time) I spend £150 p.c.m.

My DH has a diesel car and works full time . he spends £250 p.c.m.

This element of our budget is crippling us:(

No alternative as there is no public transport in our rural area.

I am earning c.£13k and he is earning c.£20k

I don't see the relevance of the question.

Surely it would be better to ask something like, how much do you spend in relation to your income.

How much someone spends means nothing unless you know how much they earn, or what percentage of their income is taken up by it.

    I am inclined to agree.
  • People moan about fuel prices but I see more and more new or nearly new cars on the road compared to the 1990s.

It could certainly be argued that the relative cost is more significant for people who spend a higher proportion of their income on vehicle fuel and home energy. I'm fortunate enough that neither is a big deal for me, and so have no strong views about the government doing anything in relation to these issues for my benefit. Pensioners freezing in their own homes is an issue that is important though.

Not sure of the exact cost but I drive a Volvo C70, 2.3ltr T5 petrol turbo and do a 7.4 mile round trip for work.. plus wherever I go for lunch.
It costs a lot more than it could do if I had a dull car, but it's not breaking the bank.
  • About £20 a week on fuel to cover 36 mile daily round trip to work.
    Mortgage remaining: £42,260 of £77,000 (2.59% til 03/18 - 2.09% til 03/23)

    Savings target June 18 - £22,281.99 / £25,000

Just short of £2K per year (15,000 miles at 48mpg and £1.369 per litre).

Which of course grossed up means nearly £3K of my salary, and that equates to well over 1/2 my annual bonus.

Although wife and I have a car, we spend £0 on fuel commuting to work, as we both cycle the approximately 16 mile daily round trip commute. That also reduces cost of gas, as most of our showers are taken at work :D And as the house is empty every week day, our employers also pay for a lot of the heating we benefit from.

Averaging the cost of cycling (including new bikes every few years, replacement parts, etc), we don't spend more than a combined total of £10 per week, and probably a lot less.

House is heated by gas, total weekly spend on gas averaged across the year is £10 per week.

I do occasionally take train into work (if very wet, or sub zero), and wife uses train a lot more than me. Nonetheless, I doubt that (averaged over year) we spend more than maybe £5-£10 per week combined on train fares.

I make that a total of about £7.50 spend per week on commuting and £5 spend per week on heating for each of us.
