I was obsessed with not being induced as my mum swears this was why I was a difficult baby and my brother wasn't - I was induced at around 11 days late and arrived screaming and mad at the world. He arrived naturally at 13 days late and was a placid baby.

I was obsessed 'cos being late is apparently hereditary! Imogen was 3 days late in the end, although labour started 5 days earlier!!

I was told by my MW that a local consultant used to refuse to book inducements until 40 + 14 days and had one of the lowest rates in the country because most babies arrive naturally before the 14-day mark. I think it's only a problem being late if your placenta isn't working properly, but they can test for that.

Good luck anyway - let us know what you have and don't forget to join the MSE Parent Club!

Just to say i hope everything went well and you are on the way to having a good labour and delivery.

Just to say, in my experiances, you can object to being induced but it doesnt matter! I refeused most of the treatments but they ended up doing them anyway by saying they were just checking things or doing something else. Being my first baby and not ever knowing what to expect (my birth plan was nothing like this) i ended up having an emergancy section because they messed around so much and caused me and the baby so much distress!

Next time.. if there is a next time.. im not going to let it happen again!

  • i hope you're having a lovely labour or snuggling a gorgeous baby now :D if not, log in through the patientline and have a natter on here :D

i've been induced both times and the second time was a shorter labour (8 hours first time, 3 hours second time). both times on the drip and both times nowhere near ready for natural labour.

a couple of things i was told, just in case you're not sure about having interventions. firstly, once you have a pessary that's it - they will not let you go home until the baby has been born. i didn't actually know that at the time, felt like a right muppet at the hospital because i really wanted to go home and see if the pessary started the labour, then come back when it was in full flow.

secondly, if they have space and aren't too busy they routinely take a few of the mums who are being induced to see if they can break the waters. i was adamant that i didn't want a drip, but they told me that once your waters have been medically broken you HAVE to have the drip up after a couple of hours. they said 2, i argued and got 4 but after 4 hours i was still nowhere near going into labour and had to have the drip. having thought about it i wish i had said no you're not breaking my waters then - i would have waited an extra few days to see what happened with just the pessaries.

i was told by a lovely midwife that it's the baby's head which hurts, so a 7lb baby with a massive head will hurt just as much as a ten pound baby with the same size head, but without the gravitational help from being a heavy baby behind the head means it will take longer to push out :rotfl: both of my children had an enormous head, top of the chart. weight-wise they were very different, i think the head size must be genetic. so by this midwife's reckoning leaving the baby in for an extra week or so might mean an extra pound on the birthweight but hardly any of that will be extra head circumference, so don't worry about it :D

    Your so right.

Best experiences I had were with DS1 and DS2. I had a GP Unit birth. Fantastic :j Same midwife all the way through the pregnancies and she delivered both my boys. Much more relaxed, always knew what was going on, no pressure (except in the obvious place) and went home within 2 hours of having them and best of all no stitches.

Strange how with both my girls who were delivered by a 'strange' midwife in hospital, it was the complete opposite. And I had stitches.

Best comment I had was being told I didn't want to push. Umm, actually Yes I bloody did. Maybe that's why DD2 appeared 2 minutes later. :rotfl:

But then I'd only given birth 3 times before. So there was no way I could have any idea what my body was telling me to do.

I got a Pessary at 8am in the morning. Then was allowed to walk around the hospital - I was getting painless irregular contractions. Then at 2pm was given another Pessary. the Midwife/Healthcare worker/Cleaner - whoever did it - caught me with the Plastic and really hurt me. I was then sent off around the hospital again.

It got to 9pm and I was getting contractions that were hurting me and so they gave me some Paracetamol and told me that they were far too busy to fully induce me that night but they would do it in the morning - I was having Twins. So, they told hubby to go home, told me to get comfy (I was in agony) and !!!!!!ed off. 5 minutes after this I was in agony screaming, contractions were coming really fast and my MIL was asking someone to come but they didn't - 20 minutes after this, of being ignored... my waters broke and I was screaming. Still, being ignored. Only, it turns out it wasn't my waters breaking - I was pouring blood. Eventually, my MIL shouted that I was haeamorraghing and could someone PLEASE come and help.... well when they realised what was happening... 3 came in and I smugly told them I had TOLD them I needed help. Wasn't that smug though... was in crucifying pain!

My first labour was fantastic - should I do it again, I would refuse to be induced. I had a nightmare Labour because of it I believe.

That's awful... it wasn't the induction per se that was bad, it was the incompetent staff!

I had to be induced with my second baby. He was BIG and they wouldn't let me go over my due date at all (had bad birth with 1st baby too). I only ended up having my waters broken and then everything progressed OK from there. (I still ended up with an emergency section but hey...I tried!) Having the waters broken sounds and looks horrible, but my consultant was brilliant. It was uncomfortable and I did feel mild pain but at least it got me going without any other medication.

The decision is yours at the end of the day. I'm sure we can all go on about how awful our labours were - they are awful - but the baby has to come out eventually, it is unlikely to be a perfect birth (very few are) so just try not to worry, take a deep breath and make your decision and then go with the flow as much as possible.

Best of luck to you and hope you have a safe delivery with both of you being healthy and well at the end of it!

    Any news from the OP?

Hope everything went smoothly with the induction (if you decided to go ahead with it), and you are snuggled up to your lovely new baby!
