Being induced for the 2nd time?

Hi,
I'm currently 11 days overdue with my 2nd baby and wondering how they do incuctions on 2nd labours? I'm due to be induced tomorrow and I don't know what to expect, I know that inductions are slightly different for 2nd or subsequent deliveries than for a 1st time delivery and that it should be quicker but thats about it.:o am really worrying about this so any advice would be appreciated.

They do inductions exactly the same as they do with your first.
If you haven't already had a sweep then your MW will probably try that. Once you go in you will prob have another plus a pessery. I had 3 sweeps and pesserys but my cervix only dialated about 3cms so I was taken down to the labour ward to have my waters broke. Again that did nothing so then it was on to the drip. Established labour once on the drip lasted 2 hours.
Hope you go in soon

Refuse to have anything done until you are satisifed you know what the plan is & what may/may not happen. Keep your legs crossed & ask as many questions as you want before letting them do anything! You can ask for some time to think about it before they induce & can refuse to be induced at all or only the first part of an induction etc if thats what you prefer, assuming babe isn't showing any signs of distress. You don't HAVE to be induced at all, although it is very rare that this choice is made clear to patients!

as Lillibet says - protocols vary a lot between units but here they don't get antsy until you're 14 days over and I know of women who've gone for 18 days before finally agreeing to be induced (amidst scare stories of how terribly the baby may be suffering etc etc.) It is hard to fight your corner but it's your choice and they can't force you. As far as I know the process is the same but my friend said her second labour was quicker but more painful with the induction than the first but some of that was that she felt less in control because the Drs had scared her so much.0

I've never been induced, but just wanted to wish you good luck for tomorrow. Second babies are normally faster though...I only just made it to the hospital with my second...he was born less than an hour after we arrived.
I agree with Lillibet though, you do not have to be induced. I hope in the mean time you and the other half are busy trying what got baby there in the first place....I found that worked really well for getting mine out :j .0 -
The only difference between first and second deliveries is... when you have your first you dilate.. but when you have your second.. they know that the first 1cm is always dilated... because you never get back to zero :rotfl:
Seriously though... try to avoid being induced.. my second labour was hell after being induced. First labour was fab. She went 11 days overdue.0 -
I'm so confused!
I'm dreading tomorrow, I think they're going to check how favourable my cervix is and if I'm already dialating theyll break the waters and if not then I get the pessarys or the drip
I'm also worried cos ds was a big baby 9lb8oz and I'm a size 8 lol, they say your 2nd is bigger and I'm worrying about the logistics of actually giving birth to this baby if I go much more overdue. If I go in can I consent to just a pessary being given but not having my waters broken? Or having my waters broken but not the drip?
thanks for your replies xx0 -
You can't have the drip until your cervix is ready, but you can object to pretty much anything you want.
If there is something that you don't want jot it down in your birth plan and go through it with your MW tommorrow. If I had it my way I wouldn't have had the pessary, I just hated it.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -
Debated on whether to post or not because I don't want to scare you I have been induced twice ds1 4 1/2 yrs ago went fine was a second baby went in on Wednesday night had to have 2 pessaries they broke waters at 4pm on thursday had him 01.05 am on friday morning was painful though.
Second time ds2 was 13wks ago went in on Friday morning monitored all was well they put pessary in had to lie on bed for 1hr then sent for lunch went back to delivery suite where they started to monitor again babies heartrate dropped to below 80bpm and wouldn't come back up the room filled and they ran with bed to theatre knocked me out and gave me a section was horrific but we were both OK I don't attribute what happened to hospital and I am thankful I was there else who knows what would have happened but I believe they saved ds2s life.
What I want to say is don't worry too much about it you don't have to let them do it, it really wasn't what I wanted but given past obstetric history I couldn't take the risk and now I thank my lucky starts I did it was going to be delayed for a week but brought forward as my mum was going away and she is my birth partner thank god for that.
Go with whatever feels right for you and what I am trying to say is they are all different (labours) and what will be will be.:j:love: Getting married to the man of my dreams 5th November 2011

I refused to have my waters broken, the midwives tried to persuade me several times but respected my decision to refuse. I did eventually agree near the end of my labour & I feel it was my decision.
A supportive partner helps, someone to say, "well lets see what X thinks of this idea before we go ahead with it" will help you feel more secure about thinking things through & will make the midwives see that you aren't going to be pushed around.
Hospitals have this great trick of just assuming you will go along with what they say, they come along and say "now we're just going to do this, that and the other", you need to say "hold on, what are the implications of this that & the other? I want to think about it & talk to my partner before we go ahead. The baby is fine & not in any distress so we can afford to wait another hour/day until I feel the time is right for this or until it is really necessary" etc. I simply said to them that I wasn't going to be induced just because my baby wasn't meeting their schedule! As he & I weren't in any distress they had no grounds to try & persuade me otherwise.
You can agree to as much or as little of the induction as you want. The hospital isn't obliged to give you anything/everything you ask for bug they can't give you anything you refuse, so if you ask for a sizing scan they don't have to supply it (although they probably will if they think it will help thier case!) but if you refuse the pessary they can't force you to have it!

My 2nd baby was induced. They burst my back waters at 7.30am. Quite uncomfortable at the time but contractions started about an hour later.
Bubba appeared about 6 hours later.0
