John Lewis bought broken iPad, only just out of warranty

My iPad screen has just died, after it fell off my bed. It's likely a connection to do with the graphics has gone loose inside, because the rest of it is fine, it reacts to being plugged into my computer the same as it ever did.

The annoying thing is that I've just looked out the receipt and it was bought 2 years and 8 days ago, and John Lewis' guarantee is for 2 years, so it is only just out of warranty. If I go up to JL tomorrow, will I have any luck, and should I employ any particular strategy, like things to say (honest, not so honest, produce receipt)? I'm pretty certain if this had happened just 2 weeks ago then they would have sent it for repair or replaced it, as I've had good service from them in this respect before, so it seems arbitrary really. I am prepared to accept (with a heavy heart) that this could be one of these bad luck timing things, but not if I haven't tried everything I can.

    Your first sentence worries me.
That does sound like the fault may be user inflicted, doesn't it?

Have you read MSE's Consumer Rights guide?
In there you will find that you have rights up to six years from the point of sale.

You may have to prove the fault is inherent, but I wouldn't worry about that until JL have refused a remedy.
As you say, they are pretty good.

If you get no joy, ring up an apple shop and get an appointment, one of their geniuses will usually repair it for you, and sometimes they replace free of charge. Just don't tell them you dropped it, I'd go for the ignorance is bliss...I have no idea why it's not working.

Apple are great at sorting their own products.

Thanks. I know the whole dropping things is pretty dodgy but it was an accident, I really didn't intend for it to fall and these things happen. I guess I should try, I don't have anything to lose!

If "these things happen" a lot to you then maybe you should consider getting contents insurance with accidental cover, rather than chancing your arm either telling a lie or withholding the truth to get a repair done.

I thought this was going to be an actual faulty iPad that JL were refusing to fix because it was out of warranty, I was expecting it to turn into a SoGA battle.

OP it may be worth changing the title, you did not buy a broken iPad, you bought a working iPad over two years ago and now you have dropped it and broken it. JL don't have to do anything for you at all, this is what accidental damage on contents insurance is for or gadget protection with your bank.

Yes the title does need changing as i dont think John Lewis bought a broken iPad
  • So you broke it, and now want someone else to pay for the repair.

And you are prepared to lie to get this done.

What a horrible person you are, I hope karma gets you.

That's a bit harsh! The op is probably gutted and just trying to find a way of getting it sorted, that does not make them a horrible person.

I've dropped my I pad more times than I can remember twice from a very high height and its fine. That's why I'd try the apple shop. It could be something the can very easily repair.

I heard this rumour before, so I took the trouble to book an appointment with the Regent Street Apple Store. I took the two MacBook Airs I have, the hinges on which had both broken due to a design fault. They were running 20 minutes late on the day (a quiet weekday) and then I had absolutely no luck in getting anything done as they were just out of warranty. The Genius Bar is not really staffed by geniuses, more like school leavers who like the idea of working in a shiny shop with shiny things!
