How is there more? All the packs are 10Kg?
  • the hotties are 10 packs and the teso are 12 if burning two a night, was hoping to get away with one of the hotties its an extra nights burning per pack as they seem to burn at the same rate or there was vey little difference

Back again with another question :)

For those of you burning wood exclusively (but in a multi-fuel stove) - roughly how many hours of burning before the ashpan is full? Still trying to work out if I'm running mine right (Fireline Inset).

    Thanks

Not quite what you asked but mine is a wood burner and it needs emptying every 4-5 weeks. Roughly half an Asda carrier bag at a guess.
  • Just going back a post or two - just to point out that the Tesco heatlogs (branded Fuel Express) are indeed in packs of 12 as against 10 for the Hotties. However, Hotties are produced to an average pack weight of 10kg - the Fuel Express ones only average 8.5 - 9kg

Skulls, thanks for that. Difficult to get a direct comparison, i know - should have thought that a) no ashpan in dedicated woodburners and b) depends on size of ashpan so "half an Asda carrier" is a good comparator for volume. Could you have a stab at roughly how many hours that is? Is it on every day for a roughly similar number of hours?

    Thanks

    Roughly 12 hours 5 days a week, then 24/7 for 2 days, so about 108 hours/week.

Blimey O'Riley! So half a bag every 400-500 hours? Now I'm worrying. Mine's on roughly between about 3 to 5 hours of an evening and I think I'm emptying ashpan about once a week - but that's not completely full because of fear of throwing it all over the house on its way outside. Pan is roughly about A4-ish size, I think (fire on now so can't doublecheck) and about an inch high.

I think I will have to start timing how it's on for and stashing the ash in a bag to compare.

Does either the temperature it's run at or the species of wood burnt have any effect?

Thank you again for your patience with all my questions.:o

If you are burning wood and it is just falling through the grate you can put it back on top of the grate and it will burn away (probably best not when in operation).

I used to empty it out once a week like you do but now i just re-add it to the ash bed on the grate.

If you are burning smokeless i'd expect a pan full for disposal every other day (give or take).

Thanks, Alleycat. Although it is technically a multi-burner with rotary grate, I only ever put wood in it.

I've just thought - the fact that the grate is the primary air control - that's going to allow more ash to fall through to the pan when compared to a dedicated woodburner where all the air comes from above, isn't it? Or have I got hold of the wrong end of yet another stick? :)
