With the banks being too big to fail and now getting their act together post the banking crash there is every chance the present share price of 80p will go past £1 and continue up.

Of all the FTSE quoted banks Lloyds is the one with the most direct correlation to the state of the UK economy. Be interesting to see how the TSB is split away from the Group, i.e. shares to existing shareholders. Then the dividend policy it adopts.

What I want to know is, when will they start paying dividends again?

For Lloyds shares that would appear to be the crucial question now. Brokers have recently recommended both HSBC and Lloyds. HSBC has risen sharply but Lloyds has stayed static. The difference? HSBC pays a good dividend. Lloyds still doesn't pay a dividend.

Lloyds reported good profits but a further 750 million as contingency for PPI. HSBC reported good profits but had a connection with possible currency trading fraud. The market chose to go with HSBC and ignored Lloyds.

If the government want to get more of our money back from their ownership of Lloyds introducing a dividend will improve the share price and therefore the governments return on our enforced investment in 2008.
