If this happened "a few months ago" and you're still chewing it over .....I have to wonder why.....and if there hasn't been a "next time" yet it sounds like the group doesn't get together very often ..... so why are you all churned up about this ?

I read it as the arrangements were made months ago, but it only happened this week.

She says that she forgot, why don't you believe her? Unless I am missing something, that seems perfectly plausible - especially as she then went to a restaurant across the road at the same time. Suggests she is either forgetful or incredibly stupid.

OP says 'keep today's lunchtime free', so I assume it happened today.

Yes you're right ...I misread that bit ......but really - I forget what I'm going to be doing tomorrow let alone months ahead ........ It appears friend A has already spoken to Friend B and she said she forgot so I'm not sure why the OP is deciding the whole group shouldn't invite her. If the OP has a birthday meal with this group she can invite who she pleases (or not as the case may be) but perhaps these gatherings mean more to the OP than friend B. Retired people are often very busy -often more so than people who are still working and have a wider circle of friends as they have more time. (It sounds like friend B is either early retired or a few years older than the rest of the group who all still work)

Google calendar is your friend! When you are forgetful that is... I live by it.

It sends me a txt, and an email to remind me to do something, or be somewhere.

Maybe I'm just lazy, don't have to think anymore, Google will tell me now

Friend B is a technophobe! When she gets a text from her network provider, she goes in a tizz! Me and her OH have given up to teach her as she does not absorb technology.

A's birthday, up to A to decide whether she's bothered by it or not, can't really see why it's such a biggie for the rest of you.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Sorry I cannot multiquote - tried before and it was a mess.

But the thing I pointing out is why does B agree to something to go to back in May and then arrange something else the day before?

If someone said to me yesterday, do you want to come out for a meal tomorrow lunchtime, I will always say thanks but I had something planned months before.
