....Can a bidder then, place a bid of say £50k, which is more than the car was worth brand new, just to secure the winning bid ... turn up, say i'll give you £200 for it, get told no, walk away & then that's my brother out of pocket in listing & final value fees?

Maybe you don't fully get ebay.

To reach 50k then another bidder or bidders would have had to keep bidding on the car to get it to £49500 before it closed at £5k.

and why do you think they depreciate?

    You tell me.

Starting with the BMW 318i tourer that I bought for £500 with full MOT and 6 months tax. Absolutely nothing wrong with., even had full leather interior that looked like new.
Was nothing wrong with it six months later either when it only had 6 months MOT yet I struggled to sell it and only got £450.

so please, tell me why you THINK they depreciate.

As that's all it was. It doesn't have to be correct, it just had to make a point to find the answer to a question, which it did & the person responding understood so all is well.

Virtually everything on E-Bay is bought without seeing it-its an online auction.!

There's a bit of a difference between buying a used pair of shoes for £10 & a car for a few £100 or even £1000s in other peoples cases.

I buy things online without seeing them in person first, however I'd never buy a car without seeing it first. Unless it was selling for less than scrap value & that was my intention.
  • When it all goes wrong put up a 30 day classified advert for a realistic price, it will cost you £14.99 and will eliminate time wasters and final value fees.

Only ever take cash when selling cars on eBay.

(There is no seller protection at all if you allow paypal)

What do you do if they send payment via paypal even though you've requested cash on collection?

Send it back & repeat yourself?

    Definitely.

( Are you sure you didn't offer PayPal? How did they get your pp address?)

It does make me laugh when I see long-term sellers listing cars & putting in the listing "deposit of £250 by Paypal must be made within 24 hours of purchase".
What's to stop the buyer raising an 'Item Not Received' when they get back with the car?.

Over the years I have sold various vehicles & the value depends on the make/model.
