If the limit was 60mph then 74-76mph is too high for a course in the Met Police area.

Not sure about elsewhere in the country.

Good job the Met don't police the M42 then. With your speedo over read you're in line for a course.

Since when was that type approved for speed enforcement?
It doesn't have to be type approved to be used as evidence of speed and in theory it's quite possible to prosecute for speeding on the strength of CCTV evidence, though in practice it wouldn't be done routinely.
  • you will find you are unlikely to get a ticket as I live near here(I live in redditch but work at solihull)so go along this road every day, even when the speed limi is lower you still get people doing 80mph ,btw they flash if you go to 81mph even when the limit is lower... and most of them dont work but will still flash at speeds over 81mph..
you may find here was a car passing you going faster which set a camera off.

Same on m1 motorway new finished sections have variable speed camera limits too . Northbound and southbound . You got to have your wits about and pay close attention to them . The clue is in (variable ) . One section it will be displaying 60mph , further ahead drop 50mph or even 40mph catching drivers with poor attention span . And have Seen cameras flash at vehicles when driving in the opposite direction . I make regular commute still amazes me the amount of drivers who appear to disregard speed limit s being displayed. Am I missing something !

I just want to say thanks to the people who've replied with helpful and insightful comments on here and to the trolls well you can go back under your bridge.

I'm still expecting a letter to wing its way through my front door and to be fair its deserved for me not being more careful but obviously keeping my fingers crossed that nothing comes of it as I've learnt my lesson.

Contrary to what's been said on here, I live close by and I know three people who have been done for speeding through the active traffic management on M42!

    Hi,

There was a variable speed limit of 60 which was in force as I was coming up to the camera section but I didn't notice so ended up going through it about 74-76 miles per hour as I didn't realise I was being quite heavy footed.

How can you miss those massive overhead gantries which have the speed limits illuminated three times across three lanes in signs that must be six foot square at least?

No, but the "wrong" font has now been approved by the Secretary of State so it has become the "right" font.

I use this stretch a lot and it does annoy me that the font is not very good, especially on a dark rainy night with glare, a rainy windscreen and spray.... for no reason you can go past gantry after gantry set to 60mph then they throw one in at 50mph, the next one then goes back to 60. The 5 and 6 can be quite indistinct in poor conditions and to me it is clearly just done to trap and make revenue.

I know this is a very old post now but what happened in the end Jaymo?
