A more pertinent question, are they using the right font now?

Have you been driving with your eyes closed. There have been gantry mounted gatsos along the variable speed section of the M42 (junctions 3a to 7) ever since the active traffic management system came into force back in 2005.

I generally keep my eyes on the road and cars around me, never been sent any kind of ticket, and when it's quiet enough i have put my foot down through there.

I guessed there were cameras but always kinda thought that they were just CCTV, so the controllers can monitor traffic and detirmine what speed limit they put up.

If im wrong then i guess ive been lucky...

Although havent all speed cameras in the West Midlands been decommissioned anyway...? or does that not include these?

No, but the "wrong" font has now been approved by the Secretary of State so it has become the "right" font.

There are a lot of CCTV cameras on that stretch (and ANPRs) which can also be used to determine speed, which the police can monitor and prosecute if they choose, however their intended use is traffic management, not enforcement.

I think I've read somewhere that there are only a small number of active, enforcement cameras (HADECS), I think I read only 8 in total, but these are used for enforcement of the NSL, not the variable. TBH, unless driving well beyond the NIP you'd be very unlikely to be caught speeding along this stretch.

What's the NIP and how does one enforce it?

HADECS cameras can and do enforce variable speed limits - it's what they're there for. Normal 10%+2 thresholds apply to whatever limit is showing. They can also enforce the national speed limit when no variable speed limit is showing. Anecdotally the threshold for NSL enforcement may be somewhat higher than usual, but I've never been brave enough to test that particular theory.

Sorry, I meant to type NSL. I don't know where NIP came from. :o

I never said HADECS can't enforce a variable speed limit only on this particular stretch I'm pretty sure they're solely used to enforce the NSL. As I said earlier the variable speed limit on the this section is mainly about traffic management, not enforcement.

I was led to believe it was the other way round and the cameras only operated when traffic management was active and not NSL.

    edit, just found this
The enforcement will be executed in the same way as it is on the M25 with the
variable speed limit signs linked to speed cameras using the Highways Agency
Digital Enforcement Camera System (HADECS). Since the introduction of the M25
cameras the hypothecation scheme has been introduced where Safety Camera
Partnerships can claim back the costs of cameras sited in areas with specific
casualty problems. If the system of hypothecation is extended to cameras used to
prevent congestion this could have serious implications for the road safety lobby.
Many drivers and sectors of the media already see cameras as revenue raisers
rather than safety measures and the use of cameras to reduce congestion could add
    to this perception.

    Can they?

Since when was that type approved for speed enforcement?
