it's a dns issue then

(dns converts the name to a number)

ipconfig /flushdns

what security software is installed?

try the same two pings on the working laptop

and download ccleaner, and hijackthis on it, transfer with a usb stick to broken machine, run on broken machine, post the hijackthis txt file here

Ok I have flushed the dns.
And reset IE

Anything I need to do to the pc after that?? In the process of getting the other bits now.

You are in good hands with Closed helping you but I just thought I would ask what you were doing with the desktop prior to this problem ?

I ask this because the last time I had this type of problem it was because I had installed a printer or scanner or something of that ilk. Took me a while to work out as didn't think that would cause internet problem but a restore from recovery point worked.

Nothing new has been added to the system as far as we're aware. This started suddenly.
I have done everything suggested now other than the scans because I need to buy a replacement usb stick to move the scan files to the broken computer. Will update when I can.
