In my experience, the people who care so much about what the car looks like on the surface, are the one's that don't look after the car mechanically.
That's a wild generalisation and there are obvious exceptions, but for many people running a car is a barely affordable luxury, they'll skimp somewhere.

My car is looking like a 9 year old car, it hasn't been washed for around 9 months, but mechanically it's sound and ALWAYS has a good quality set of tyres.

When I look for a used car, I want to see minor dents/scratches and I want to see a good set of tyres.

Nope, we both look after them well mechanically too. Also not a Chinese ditchfinder in sight.

I tend to keep cars a while if I don't get bored of them so I take care of them.

From my experience of looking for used cars, the ones with all the parking dings, scruffs and abused interiors are the ones are have been looked after on a shoe-string budget. Iffy service history and mismatched tyres. Used purely as a mode of transport and only see a mechanic when something breaks.

    Of course, there's always exceptions.

so what made you lose concentration? seems odd losing concentration like that. Mmmm I wonder whats for dinner, Mmmmmm I wonder what I should wear, Mmmmmm I wonder what was that crunch:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:.

    :p

It was reversing into a parking space at work. I do it every day and must have slipped into auto-pilot. It was a metal strut that was on the white lines between the spaces. I knew I was too far over as I reversed in, was just going into first to go forward and line it up again, when I just rolled slightly too far. :(

Just had an offer accepted on a house and trying to decide what mortgage to get - I'll blame that for distracting me!

And I know, it's ironic to reverse the rear sensor into something. :p

I wast having a go pinkteapot, I was just joking accidents happen, that's why they put erasers on the end of pencils.:rotfl:
I drive a big transit van and ive just put a reversing camera on as I cant see via the back only the mirrors, so its easy to hit a small car or motorbike if parked behind. works great even in the dark.

bumper will be plastic of sorts, not looked at pic but unless its smashed it will repair, no idea of cost. there will be a local dent specialist in your area. good luck.

A repair has to be cheaper than a new bumper from Ford. :D

    Definitely a wild generalisation ;)

I keep my cars until they're 10 years old or thereabouts so I do look after both the cosmetic and mechanical aspects.

    Welll....

I have never been known to get cosmetic defects looked at. Scuffs and dings get left as-is. But service history is by the book, with intermediate oil changes and any noise or niggle looked into. Never been particularly interested in what others think -- but don't want to break down.

That said, I do have one rather cheap tyre at the back (a Hankook) because I didn't like the idea of wasting the Goodyear spare which was brand-new but I couldn't find a matched replacement for, so picked the tyre with the closest tread pattern, which happened to be on the cheap end of the price scale.

So maybe I don't care after all...
  • I did exactly the same with my Mk 4 Mondy in January - reversed into a metal fence in the dark. My daughter also scraped the side of the bumper in a car park in Birmingham.

It cost £100 to have Chips Away come to my home (in the middle of nowhere) and repair both, and they did an excellent job. You wouldn't know it had been damaged. I'd recommend them without hesitation.

Abs plastic is black and is very bendy but firm and resilient, very difficult to crack. So called glass reinforced plastic is aftermarket tat and is white and shatters easily

I didn't mean get the dings and scruffs fixed, I actually meant I look after my car to avoid things like that. Not parking next to certain cars or in tiny gaps, keeps me ding free so far :)
