Arrrgghhh, minor slip of concentration and rolled at low speed backwards into a metal upright car park strut in our Mk4 Mondeo (10 plate).
The outermost ridge of the bumper panel has a deep scratch / light dent about 1.5" tall. Pic:

What's underneath the paintwork is white.
Is the bumper panel made of metal? If we don't replace the panel straight away, will it rust? The white under the paint has confused me - not sure if it's undercoat or the bumper is plastic!

Bumper plastic.....
Smart repair should remove that quite easily. When I bought my car it had a similar mark on the rear bumper, it was removed by the time I picked up the car.
It's actually part of the reason I bought this car, I like to see imperfections on a 2nd hand motor, imperfections mean nothing has been covered up or glossed over.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Really? I assumed we'd have to replace the whole panel...
You can see that I scratched the edge of the sensor but they still work fine fortunately.0 -

Or it could also mean someone has looked after the car.
Mine is over three years old now, not a noticeable mark on it. My Dad has a 4 year old A4 that still looks new, although it did have a tiny smart repair done on the bumper a few months back.
BTW I agree about the smart repair, that'll be no problem for them. I was expecting a gaping hole before I clicked the photo.0 -

Certainly seemed to be that way with the MK1/MK2 Mondeo...
They seemed to be made of porcelain. The bumper on my old Primera was dragged along the motorway at 70mph for a couple of miles at least and didn't crack. Mondeo bumpers, lol.0 -

Think I read somewhere that they were too expensive / fiddly to bother replacing, hence them all being gaffer taped together.0 -

.
In my experience, the people who care so much about what the car looks like on the surface, are the one's that don't look after the car mechanically.
That's a wild generalisation and there are obvious exceptions, but for many people running a car is a barely affordable luxury, they'll skimp somewhere.
My car is looking like a 9 year old car, it hasn't been washed for around 9 months, but mechanically it's sound and ALWAYS has a good quality set of tyres.
When I look for a used car, I want to see minor dents/scratches and I want to see a good set of tyres.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

They're made of plastic, so no you don't need to repair straight away, it would be easy enough to repair and cheap as long as none of the clips need replacing/repairing. Give it a good shove, if it doesn't move the clips are most likely fine.0
