Maybe because we had unions like the NUM, Car unions at British Leyland etc, the Steel workers Union, the Dockers Union, who were largely communist who like Milliband senior wanted violent revolution and weren't actually interested in the worker's interests atall
sadly none exist now, not because the unions were crushed but because the companies were destroyed.
The companies were badly managed, complacent and didn't keep up. There was a lack of investment and they became uncompetitive. We had pilaged an empire and in turn sold them our poor goods for so long we didn't lift our game soon enough.
Germany and Japan were rebuilt after the second world war whilst we "invested" our money on defence and an arms race.
The unions played their part but it wasn't their fault in the way you portray."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Because, legislation has changed whereby pension funds are protected (at taxpayer expense) from such frauds.0 -

Nothing wrong with employee representation per se. The issue arises when those at the top of Unions have an extreme political agenda. As did the Unions of the late 60's early 70's.0 -

Well it was impossible to introduce new technology that reduced jobs.
So lots of money could be spent but no savings made... only a winner for your view of economics0 -
Be interesting to see opinions on what people think a Union's role is.
To my mind this should include things like ensuring workers conditions are safe but should not include anything to do with negotiating pay. IMO a company should be free to pay as much or as little as it wants & in return people can choose to work there or not.
If a company makes widgets that sell for £1 and then demand changes & now widgets sell for 90p, it's perfectly reasonable they might reduce pay by 10%. But Unions would be out on strike immediately in such circumstances.
I've worked at places that imposed 10% pay cuts (yearly at one point). So I changed jobs to somewhere that paid more.0 -
Prime example being the print unions prior to Wapping. Some of the practices were quite bizarre and would have been laughable if not so serious.Well it was impossible to introduce new technology that reduced jobs.
