Its up to them but personally I would decline the invitation if there was no meat on the menu.

When I had my wedding we accomodated guests who were vegetarian and people who religious dietary requirements.

    Seriously?

You'd decline celebrating a close friend or close family members marriage because there was no meat ? I think that is incredibly sad.....but probably good for the bride and groom not having to fork out for a meal for someone who is only there for the free meal !

TBH - as as guest I wouldn't like because I don't like many vegetarian dishes (and for health reason's my diet is pretty limited), but in saying that It's your wedding and I would go along, tell you what a lovely day I had, how lovely the food was etc.

In reading that it would be Indian Vegetarian catering, that actually puts be off even further as I don't eat anything even remotely spiced, although as long as there was Korma and Naan Bread I could survive.

Traditional Indian Vegetarian cooking is a bit different from the 5 pot Indo-Pak stuff you normally see. Most dishes are not massively spicy; I would hope you would find something to your taste if you were in this situation, dosa (rice pancakes) are very nice if you ever get a chance to try one.

There would be a bit of eyerolling from me but I'd go and just not eat much - I follow a fairly low-carb diet so I'm known as "the picky one" anyway :D

I also hate probably 80% of vegetables. Especially root vegetables. Always have. I eat a lot of spinach and other dark leaves, peppers, onions, sweetcorn, tomatoes, and a few other things...but not too much else. (And yes, I know tomatoes are fruit. But you get the idea.) A LOT of veggie stuff is also based around nuts, which I'm allergic to, mushrooms, which I'm allergic to, or squashes/sweet potatoes, which I detest.

So I'd probably eat a load of delicious, protein-rich meat before the ceremony to keep me full and pick at something while I'm there. I wouldn't turn down the invitation, especially if it was someone I care about a lot, but also I do think it's a bit rude to not provide a meat option when a vegetarian option would be provided at most other weddings.

If people know what they're going to be fed and don't like it, let them bring a packed lunch! ;)

  • Hi,

I definitely wouldn't feel put out by this - I love vegetarian options and tend to opt for them at restaurants. They are always so much more interesting than just a slab of meat on a plate

Although saying that I think the males in my family would be questioning where the meat was.

But its your wedding so I say go veggie!

Why do people say veggie options are more interesting than "a slab of meat"? Meat can be very interesting - curries, stews, roasts, various sauces, pies, and that's just for starters!

Sorry it just really annoys me - 90% of "vegetarian dishes" taste the same to me, just of generic vegetables!

  • My maid of honour is a veggie and I've asked the hotel to put the extra vegetarian option on our menu.

Likewise at her wedding, I'm expecting one meat course (chicken) but the rest will be veggie.

Could they not come to a compromise like this?

I'm a full on carnivore, it's a rare day without any meat involved, and I'd never order a veggie dish if there's meat on offer! However, if I had friends that were veggies, I'd be expecting a veggie wedding. It's their wedding day, the one day where it's all about them, so they should have what they want. Tell the guests to feel free to have a big meaty breakfast in the morning ;)

Did go to a handfasting ceremony earlier this year where we were to be served a raw food buffet.. yep. Envisioning platters of carrot and cucumber sticks, we were pleasantly surprised by things like an amazingly tasty salad mix, a delicious cake type thing, and fruit to dip in a raw chocolate fondue!

    An Asian buffet sounds delicious!

This implies that if you are a meat eater, you cannot enjoy a meal which does not contain meat - which speaking a meat eater, is nonsense.

That's not what I meant at all. If there was no doubt whatsoever that everyone would enjoy the vegetarian option then we wouldn't be having this conversation.
