mammogram recall.

Comments

  • I was recalled and also called back quickly, I think it is so you don't have to worry for long.
They had found a small lump in my breast. I had another mammogram and a biopsy and got the results the following week. Luckily it was all clear.
A large percentage are harmless so please try not to worry too much and good luck :)

Hello aggypanthus, I have just been through this.
According to the leaflet I had, recalls for further tests (as opposed to a technical fault) after a routine mammogram happen to 5% of women. Of these 80% will be found to have nothing wrong after a further mammogram, ultrasound and possibly a biopsy (about 3 out of 8 have a biopsy.)
Please let us know how you get on.

This is, I believe, especially common after your first mammogram because they don't have anything to compare it with - on subsequent visits they can look at the dense patches and see if they were there last time.

I was unlucky as they found cancerous tissue, no doubt, seemingly, from what the scan shows, and the needle biospy result is expected to confirm it.
I am glad they were very honest and didnt fob me off with, "it might be". They said they are going down the route of lumpectomy, thats all I know till the path results.
So here begins my turn on the cancer conveyor belt.
    Results in a few days.

Candle light, if you were clear, why are you having checks with surgeon?

So sorry to hear the diagnosis, hope you have a good support system round you at this time.
  • Hi Aggy, sorry to hear your news.

I had a lumpectomy and 25 sessions of radiotherapy. My hospital is very good because for the first 2 years after the op I had a check up every 3 months with both surgeon and oncologist and thereafter every 6 months up to 5 years. I also have to take tamoxifen for 5 years as well.

I don't know whether this is standard practice in all hospitals, but I am sure you will be closely monitored.

It is a frightening place to be in to start with but believe me you will get through it. If you are married try to include your DH and tell him your feelings. It is almost as difficult for them because they have to stand by and see what you are going through.

When you have the full results from the path lab you will know exactly what is what, and then if you want to pm me please do, and I will try to answer any questions you might have.

As I said previously I am almost 3 years after the operation (I had it just before Christmas) and feel great, and I am so grateful to the hospital, my wonderful DH and all my family.

Always be positive Aggy and I send you lots of hugs

    Candlelight xx

Thanks a lot, CL, yes it was a shock, but I didnt freak out. MY DH came with me, and he was shocked, but we are talking about it. he is being strong/ manly and its a bit annoying- he is the protector and doesnt want me to worry over him, worrying over me lol.
I am confident at this stage, as its small, and not been graded yet.
must admit, I googled and dont like the look of those radiotheray machines!! I read that it takes a few appt to even plan the RT ?
Thanks I shall pm when I need you x
