mammogram recall.

Sorry if this in the wrong place.

Has anyone been called back for more tests after a routine bi anual mammogram?
The letter says that the result is UNCLEAR . I am starting to get a bit worried. Also the next appt is within days so they seem to be in a hurry.

It could be a very simple explanation - they couldn't read mammogram! so want to re-do it.
and the reason its so quick is that they had a slot available!
Good luck and I hope the end result is clear!

Thanks, they are actually doing more tests at another medical place in the city, not the mammogram bus. They say expect 1 - 2 hours visit.

Try not to worry. They may just need to do the scan again at a slightly different angle, or do an ultra-sound. They may also want to do a biopsy to check out any tissue which looks slightly different. They give you a LA before they take the biopsy. My local breast clinic is excellent and very approachable, why not give them a ring on Monday for a bit more info so you are not worrying all week.

As meritaten says it may be that they had a slot available quickly. It may also be that they have to meet targets to see patients within a certain time frame. I had some breast tissue removed earlier this year and it was done within a fortnight of seeing the consultant. I was astonished at the lack of waiting time. The tissue they removed had a 10 to 20% chance of becoming cancerous, but even then it would take years rather than months. I would have been happy to wait but I suspect this aspect of hospital treatment is target driven - hence the speedy op.

I had a recall after a routine mammogram and was seen in less than a week. The problem was that the view from the first one showed an apparent dense mass but the follow up appointment was clear. I was told that sometimes it's simply down to the angle of the scan and if the little ducts within the breast tissue are effectively lined up behding each other it can appear as a lump.
i know it's the easiest thing to say and hardest to do but try not to get too worried. The important thing is that you're being seen quickly, and the probability is that you will be fine. Let us know how you get on x

If I can help to ease any unnecessary axiety, my GF had this 3 years ago. She received a letter recalling her, saying that the letter wasn't signed to expediate matters and that it may be necessary to see an oncologist etc.

Having had a breast cancer in 2005, she was teriffied but had got to know the girl in the clinic a little. When we arived, the clinic girl said that this was quite routine and that there was no cause for undue concern, the radioligist had seen the mamagram and wanted to make sure that it was just a cyst. So it turned out. I think the girl said that something like 1 on 7 mamograms were recalled and that of those only 1 in 20 had anything out of the ordinary.

I really hope my post helps you to relax about it and good luck
  • I didn't want to read and run.

This happened to me 3 years ago, and in the letter there was a telephone number saying if I wished I could 'phone and speak to someone before my appointment. As I received the letter on a Friday I felt I needed to know what might happen.

I spoke to the Superintendent Radiographer, who was very kind, and she said they needed to do an ultra sound and a biopsy.and it would take about 2 hours.

As I understand it, it could be dense tissue or a cyst, but obviously they don't know until the investigation. Unfortunately mine wasn't either, but thankfully that is what a mammogram is for to find problems early.

3 years on I am really well, have a 6 monthly check up with surgeon and oncologist.

I am not going to say don't worry, because you can't help it, but try to be positive that it is something very minor, and please come back and let us know how you get on.

Wishing you luck for your appointment and sending you hugs if you need one.

The data's not that easy to come by but it makes for interesting reading. If people have a 'positive' mammogram, i.e. the radiographer finds something of concern, most people think that means their chance of cancer is around 75%. In fact it's as little as 6%. Yours isn't even 'positive', simply unclear and they'd like another go. The statistics are overwhelmingly on your side.

Oh, and if they were worried, they'd be phoning, not writing.

I was recalled last time, 3 years ago, and again it was a very short time frame. It turned out to be a liquid filled cyst the size of a large grape and was drained, a fresh mammogram done to check and I was on my way.

I think the fact that you have been recalled for another mammogram probably means that the one they did wasn't good enough for them to check you out.

If they'd found something, you'd probably have been given an appointment at your local hospital for a biopsy.
This happened to me and the biopsy showed nothing wrong.

Maybe the appointment is so quick because they are still in your area.

    Hope everything is OK.

+1 for the try not to worry. (In a perfect world every shot would come out perfect, but life happens & your team are just being careful & following the standard guidelines.)
+1 also for the if they were *really* worried, they'd phone.
