Well apart from the slightly unfriendly lecture, what do you think i do with the books that are no longer profitable to sell? I donate them of course.

I don't sell books on amazon to give them profits, but to fund more books.

When I first started amazon selling, i sold off all my books (mainly paperbacks) and earned a lot- like 300 quid the first year. But prices to do so have gone up, as have postage costs.

So I don't sell so much anymore as I can only sell the ones that will pay some profit (books that cost me 88p to send now cost nearly 1.50). By the time amazon takes their cut, and you pay for postage and packing, you could earn nil.

I now use any profits to buy more books lol, which saves money overall.

Hi all! Back again. :) Nice to be home.

atush, didn't realise postage had gone up so much - it used to be quite profitable to sell books off at 1p. But using profits to buy books could be a useful strategy. eBay used to be quite a good place to sell books too but no idea whether it still is ... must find out.

It is a combination of postage and the amazon fees. They make selling any book (even the smallest) unprofitable at less than a quid.

I haven't found ebay good for selling books either, but have found selling other items good.

Quite frankly still PO'd at Rolling home's comment. How dare they lecture people what to do with their own goods and money? It isn't their business to ell me how much to give to charity (and I do constantly).

Welcome home Cathy :) Have a look at Fatbrain for selling books, I got rid of quite a few books to them. You just type in the ISBN number on their website and they tell you if they want that book. Then when you have done them all, you download and orint out a free postage sticker and post them off :)
  • Still following this thread when it pops up to top page very so often :) happy belated birthday Atush. I am not saving near what I should be, having a bad month at work and I'm away to Paris for valentines...will hopefully make up for it in march but looks like instead of fortnightly pay I won't be getting anything come 2 weeks on Friday :( hence why I need to carry on being obsessed with saving/combined with frugal living to get my 6months living expenses, then 6 months salary in accessible savings accounts/decent paying interest current accounts.

oh, that's annoying. I was relying on Amazon for flogging off my books. :(

Re Rollinghome, it's a bit silly, because while obviously giving to Oxfam is a good thing to do, MSE is all about maximising your use of your money, not a forum for displaying how generous you are to charities, so people on MSE are obviously more likely to focus on how they both boost their income and save their pennies. You could say to pretty much every single person on MSE, "Wouldn't it be nicer if you gave what you saved by doing [fill in the strategy] to charity?" But that isn't the point of MSE. :(

YoungBusinessman, I've been away for a few days. The thread should hopefully pop up a bit more regularly from now on. :)

Bad news about work but I am sure you'll compensate - you are obviously a hard worker and you have been doing really well up until now. But you're right, it's good to keep the need to save the pennies constantly in the mind. :) I hope work recovers soon - spring will be here in about a month, so that will work in your favour, obviously. Have fun in Paris btw, such a fabulous city. :)

    Hi Cathy,

Just popping in to say hello and try to keep my motivation for saving high!

My bank balance is looking pitiful this morning, but husband is getting paid (weekly pay) today and it should be in the bank about lunchtime.

I saved £3.50 yesterday by going to the park instead of softplay so i put that money into our bank.

    How is everyone getting on?

I'm definitely falling in love with saving money, but i do still love spending so i must make sure that the savings loving side wins!
