We can only hope that prices will increase by the time we want to move but it's unlikely they'll go back up to what we bought it for.
Of course if your old home were to rise and your new home were to fall that would be even better - but it's unlikely to happen.Eco Miser

OK, a story of food and money[strike]saving[/strike]wasting:
The other day, I was passing the ice-cream section in my local supermarket (I usually avoid) when I noticed some reduced to clear 130ml of blackcurrant and liquorice for 50p instead of £1. So I took one to try;)
Today, they're 25p, so I've stocked up. So, £2 spent for £6 original price, is that £4 saved or £2 wasted? Could I have had a lower unit cost by buying a litre?Eco Miser

It worked out in the end, although for a while we were in way over our head - both financially and with the size of the job we took on. It was a complete back-to-brick refurb, new floors, stairs, electrics, plumbing, everything. Finally moved in properly about a week before our first child was born :eek:0 -

It might have all sold out at the first marked-down price. So in my book it's £4 saved.
However, if you develop a "blackcurrant and licorice" habit, the story may change, for good or ill? ... It was nice, obviously, if you stocked up on it? BTW, it had never occurred to me that the ice cream section of my local Tesco might have markdowns - I'll have to look! How have I never seen marked-down ice cream? I don't know. I don't often buy it actually, despite having a huge sweet tooth - it is one of those things I try to avoid, like the biscuits section
. I do make fruit sorbets in the summer/autumn from fruit at the allotment - I have some gooseberry sorbet still left over that I should probably finish off at some point. Gooseberry sorbet is the business, I love gooseberries.

That's the kind of thing that a good many people would probably find enjoyable if a) you had ample money to do it and b) you hadn't bought it with plans to live there immediately. But if neither of those things is true it's surely more of a huge load on your back, I would have thought? I do quite like the idea of "rescuing" a property like that - sometimes Grand Designs (which I watch every now and then) features people who fix run-down old industrial buildings and turn them into residences and watching the process on telly is highly enjoyable, and at the end you always think "oh that looks beautiful", but the reality of course is a lot harder to put up with0 -
Cathy, if you are dieting and want that hobnob, I have one for breakfast with a piece of fruit. Healthy enough, but still a bit of indulgence.
I have to say in general, I quite often have last night's dessert for breakfast instead of eating it the night before as I can feel too full. It cuts down on calories in general, as you then don't eat something else. Having said that, we generally only have a dessert with dinner on a sunday.0 -

atush, your hobnob brekkie sounds yum.I do think I had better desist till I've reached my goal because I have a huge weakness for chocolate and once I start eating it I do find it hard to stop, especially because I'm the only person in the house, so I'd have to eat the whole packet (over a few days, but still) or chuck part of it out. As it happens I've already lost 2.5kg of the 5kg (just checked) so should reach the goal sooner rather than later. I hereby pledge that I will celebrate reaching that goal with a hobnob.
I do like the idea of eating dessert for breakfast and in fact am quite sure I've done it in the past - with chocolate cake, I seem to recall? The sweet tooth seems even more easily satisfied at breakfast than later in the day and I agree with you, after dinner I'm often happy and I don't really feel the need for dessert.0 -
This is very quiet for a Saturday. Either everyone is out enjoying the sunshine or there's a big footy match on0
