Thanks, very helpful. I have found a sim only contract with Tesco that works, I guess I should order that first, then when received cancel my o2 contract and bring my number across with me?

The contract gets terminated at the moment the number gets ported, although it requires a 30-day notice to cancel.

However, as said above, it's well worth having your phone unlocked by O2 as they do this for free and fast enough.
