Hi
If you look carefully at the valve you will see that the red/blue levers have a 'stop'. You can work out which way to turn them . Difficult to explain here but as said they are quarter turn and will only go one way.
If you take off the lever you can use a small adjustable spanner and hold against the valve to stop the shearing action.

Thankyou everyone,
It was actually anticlockwise a quarter turn so it ended up straight up it was straight accross before. We couldnt get close enough to see it close up really its hidden behind a fitted wine thingy and in a corner and dark too its really silly being there actually. We had to spray tons of wd40 on it to get it to turn and even then it really took some forcing.
Have been able to turn the mains back on now
With the new washer being cold fill only though its going to leave the hot pipe just relying on that valve I'm not sure I feel really happy about that and Id like to get a more secure end fitting for the pipe or leave the hot flexible hose on it and get an end closing for that aswell to be doubly sure, do they sell stuff like that?Thanx

Hi Lady K,
You can get a stop for them at B&Q normally or a good plumbers merchant. From memory they are a 3/4 inch BSP connection.

Hi
kwatt is right, get one of these..... http://www.toolstation.com/search.html?searchstr=brass+cap it must be brass to avoid rusting.Go to any plumbers merchant and you should get one. Buy some PTFE tape as well and wind quite a lot round the thread of the w/m valve and tighten on.Good luck with the new machine.

Are those brass caps ok to use on plastic pipes though?
Is the ptfe thread the stringy stuff you use to help stop leaks? its just I didnt really want to seal it so much it would be unuseable if ever I decided to have a hot and cold fill again at anytime.
Do you think its ok for now just with the valve off till I can get one of the stop ends or do you think its high risk?Thanx

Hi
If you take off the hose you will be left with the chromed brass w/m valve. This is the 3/4 thread that you will screw the cap on to.
The PTFE is a tape . Imagine you are bandaging someones head.! execpt its the w/m valve and tape.

Well it was really nice of you to go and have a look to see if you could tell with your machine, thankyou for going to that trouble I really appreciated that
Someone told me once that to tighten plumbing it is the oposite way to anything else. I wasnt sure if it was true though or of everything in plumbing though, maybe a plumber can say and why that is if its true?Thanx

It's gas fittings that are on left hand threads.0
