Winter Is Coming - Lidl Screenwash 24 Oct

  • the wilkinson all season didnt have any temps written, the ECP does state it is suitable up to -8. Considering winters in this country only go as far as -5 I think it's good enough protection to be honest.
I've got a photo somewhere from last year of -12 on my cars display.
-36 and -70 celcius protection below, less than £2 per 5ltr

Note, ratings are used when neat. So I suppose you just divide the protection by the dilution ratio you use? eg. if you add 4ltr of water to 1 part screenwash then you divide the protection by 5. so the 70 degrees becomes 14

Bear in mind those aren't 5 litre bottles, they're only 500ml.

Yes but they're concentrated and they're supposed to be mixed with water to increse volume to 5 litres. That's why they're cheaper. Much cheaper to freight around and lower in storage so savings passed onto you.

But the Lidl one is 5 litres of -60

If you dilute 500ml of -70 it will make 5 litres of -7

    See the difference?

Good spot OP. I can't recommend the lidl stuff enough, it's tops. Still got about 5l left from last year. About 3-4 packs can last me all year.

The only downside is the smell.

When we drive to Austria where we get temperatures of -20C and lower, I pour it in undiluted - there is always some summer stuff left in the washer-tank before we fill up so it's possibly diluted by half - so good for -30 to -40 or so.

Never had any problems - unlike some of our friends who have had the entire washer system frozen solid for days.

Also the 5l bottles from the last couple of years have a very handy side spout making it extremely easy to dispense without spills.

Drat, bought three bottles of Carplan screenwash from B&Q yesterday but the Lidl stuff sounds much better.

Edit: Might see if I can return it actually.

I get mine in Concentrate form, from a local shop in Louth, called (absolutely true) Trotter's Traders. I have used it now for 3 years, it has seen off the heavy snow whilst parked always outside and never freezes. Used at the right seasonal concentrations on the label, it has never frothed or frozen, although the jets will freeze on my 2010 Focus: I use a jug of warm water on them until they defrost. With the right stuff, it is only the ends of the jets that freeze, the liquid behind is OK.

EDIT: If the jets are hard-frozen by extreme temperatures, I use a thin needle to poke them out, whilst pouring warm water on them, taking care not to move them about as this will change the direction of the jets.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
