Teachers on Strike

It sounds like she leaves all her marking to the weekend. Leaving 300 books to be marked doesn't sound like good organisation at all.
I suppose at least it allows her to finish work at 3:30 during the week which isn't bad.
Be interested to know how you think she can mark when she is teaching. I suppose that is something your brilliant teacher mate has perfected as well ( you know, the one you boasted about how brilliant his results are yet admitted you don't know what those results are!).
You are obviously not interested in a proper discussion. You seem only interested in provoking people.0 -

I said when you asked me that his results are good. The school has over a 95% A-C GCSE pass rate in maths. I'll be sending my kids there (it's in the top 100 state schools).
Obviously I don't know his individual breakdown but he is a member of the maths department so he is partly responsible for that figure.
I wasn't boasting anyway. I just said that my friend is a maths teacher and finds it an easy life. You then just tried to imply he was a rubbish teacher because he found it easy. It's you who started trying to provoke me. I'm just obviously better at doing it than you0 -

If the school really does have that pass rate for maths, then it would very likely be in the top ten state schools (depending on it's other results of course) and yes, obviously your friend is partly responsible for those results (it would still be interesting to know what his residual figure was). However, my OH's school is also in the top ten state schools with similar pass rate for mathematics and I therefore know the huge pressure every single maths teacher there is under to maintain those results.
I also know absolutely that those results would be neither achieved nor maintained if even one of the teachers in her department had the laid back attitude that you described your friend as having to the job.
You claimed a good teacher finds the job easy. It was an inaccurate and uninformed comment. I can be fairly confident that no one who does the job properly and to the best of their ability finds it an easy job. That is about the only thing this Government have succeeding in achieving!0 -

You're getting confused with a laid back attitude and being competent at the job. He appears laid back because he is competent and doesn't find it stressful.
Your wife obviously struggles which is why she has to do so much work outside of school hours. Alot of very good teachers organise their time better and don't struggle as much as she does.
I suspect your opinion is clouded because obviously its your wife and she tells you how hard it is so you think all teachers find it as hard. In reality they don't!0 -

Not confused at all. You are deliberately misinterpreting my posts in a ridiculous attempt at being rude and contentious, as well you know.0 -
It is subject dependent. Maths is a subject which requires a different style of marking to essay based subjects, so basing your assessment of the amount and level of marking required by a maths teacher is not helpful. Additionally, even in good schools there are those members of staff who are "carried" by others or whose marking regime would fall foul of Ofsted/the SMT if scrutinised. Your friend may well fall into this category.0

with their salaries, especially in the US i wouldnt be surprised! lol0

Exactly, but both he and the school will pay the price for trying to be fair if the kids don't achieve.
I doubt the vast majority of parents really appreciate the way their kids are being used as pawns, so much easier to castigate the teachers for what makes the headlines. It is what doesn't make prominent news which should be worrying parents.
My son is at home now, marking.
Absolutely right. And performance related pay, in it's current form, will only make this situation worse (Although I do understand that bad teachers need to be weeded out but I am not sure what the alternative should be).0 -
Wife wasn't too fussed about striking for pension reasons, however she hates the job (apart from the actual teaching which makes up about 50% of the day) and if we could afford it would be at home with our daughter. The management at her school are complete morons and the parents in her year are utter c*nts too so she was only too happy to strike. They were the only school in the area to close completely.
Recently had an offsted too, rated good, nearly outstanding. However its a complete waste of time as every teacher was up till the early hours planning the perfect lesson just to please offsted when on a normal working day they wouldn't do anywhere near that detail. Another close by school has excellent grades in maths, english etc, however they don't teach any other subjects. We've been (trying) to take on apprentices at my company mostly from that school, all very well being able to add and spell, but if you have all the social skills of a shoe you're not going to find employment.
Teaching is a sh*t job never get to see her at evenings or saturdays (and shes only part time), and I'm guessing by some of the comments here, the c*ntish parents aren't merely a feature at her school.0
