They didn't ask for any personal details when I was inquiring as to my ability to claim previous to August 14th because they just heard me say I hadn't graduated yet and told me I was ineligible straight away.
They're aware of my calls in August and September.0 -
A fair point. An equally fair point would be that in the absence of anything at all and just accepting what people say in order to get money backdated, people would be claiming all sorts of things all the time. How can they reasonably expect proof when there is no reason whatsoever that I would need to plan ahead for this situation?
However, an appeal may highlight the possibility of this issue cropping up previously in your area which increases the chance of your case being accepted. When I tried to claim after graduating I was told you can't claim until your course end term date...This is because your student loan is meant to last you until this point and you are technically still a student.Last exam date 10th May, end of term date is 24th May, I asked to backdate to 25th May.
It's not that simple though. There are funding issues. There are previous examples on these boards of Unis telling students their end of term date and that makes it sound official. But then the DWP is supplied with the "real" official end dates for all courses at all Unis etc There is a lot of variation.
rozmister is right. Of course it is possible that the May date is right, but in my experience (decades in DSS/DWP) it sounds too early.
The Uni will be funded based on the information recorded. I suspect that if they start announcing (agreeing with you) that courses ended on an earlier date than that recorded on official records, then they would risk funding issues if it appears the courses are not lasting as long as originally recorded, if you see what I mean.
Maybe your starting point would be to contact the JC and ask what date they have recorded as the end date for your course. The dates may differ for end of a year as opposed to the very end date.
If you can find what they have as that date and it really does turn out to be later than the May date, than that will tell you what the real period would be and you can judge how to proceed based on that.
This may be one of life's hard lessons, but if it turns out the May date is too soon and the backdating period is, therefore, a much shorter one, it might be less irritating for you.0 -
So what? Were there not any 'normal' jobs ie. working in cafes, cinemas, shops etc. that you could have taken? JSA allowance is supposed to be paid to people who cannot find ANY work, not because they can't find a 'graduate' job suited to their individual preferences paying £25K, free company car etc.Hello everyone,
Sorry it's a long post, I would like some advice please.
My last exam was at the start of May this year, with my 3rd term officially finishing on the 25th May. After my last exam I looked for work for 3 weeks and during that time realised that it would be much harder to get any job than first thought and also that many jobs I apply for in my subject area will likely take a few months with the application process.
For this reason I called Jobcentre Plus on the 25th May (my term ending date) to inquire as to whether I'd be able to claim JSA. Unfortunately my graduation wasn't until mid September (a ridiculous gap if you ask me) so I was told outright until I graduate I am a full time student and am not allowed to claim JSA.
