I transferred £1000 to what i thought was my sons bank account. It is an active account. I have drafted a letter to the bank concerned. am I really reliant on the cooperation of the account holder? Or will I be able to go to the police if they will not give me the money back?

Very worried.

    Yes

No - there has been no criminal offence.

Yes - the bank acted on your instruction. There is no room for error, and from what we hear here, an incorrect payment does occasionally get refunded when the a/c holder notices, but this isn't often.

A £1 test payment before sending larger amounts is something highly recommended.

And would that test payment not be flagged up as a suspicious transaction by most banks ??
That would cause more problems would it not.

I've had the opposite happen - I received a sum of unexpected money several years ago now -I tried to do the right thing and return it -but my bank were as much use as a chocolate teapot - I still have the money to this day!!

I've never had any problem with this approach.

And having an account frozen for a few hours (which hasn't happened to me) is better than sending a grand into never never land.

OP has finger issues it appears, judging by the thread title.

There's no evidence of this. One member of HSBC staff has stated on here that they would consider it a precursor to fraud, however there's no evidence their employers shared that view and its standard advice to avoid problems.

I use this method every time I transfer to any new account without fail and never had an issue.

Good luck getting your money back.

Not necessarily. I just did this today, before funding a new bank account with £10,000 from an existing account. The £1 went through within a minute, the £9,999 took about twenty minutes.

The worse that I've had is that the £1 arrived within seconds, and the £5249 took until the beginning of the next working day. I've no problem whatsoever with that as it would have taken me far longer to get it back had the details been incorrect in some way.
