I've never had any problem with this approach.

And having an account frozen for a few hours (which hasn't happened to me) is better than sending a grand into never never land.

OP has finger issues it appears, judging by the thread title.

I do not have finger problems I work in financial field and have done for many years. I have no problem with my brain either. Or my etiquette. This was a new issue for me. Thanks for your non help.:)

And would that test payment not be flagged up as a suspicious transaction by most banks ??
That would cause more problems would it not.
Santander do this with payments to a new account for the first time, they told me so when I phoned up to find out why my account was a bit frozen.

I've had no problems doing the same with other banks.

    Is this a troll alert?

You work in the financial field and fall victim of the stupidest mistake out there?

Surely you know the police can be no help whatsoever.

Good luck in getting the money back though.

The £1 transactions which flag up a fraud alert are usually on debit or credit card payments. They use this to see if they have a live card.

Why would a fraudster risk an account being stopped for a £1 transfer ? They wouldn't, they'd just go for the full amount straight away.

what did you tell the police you expect them to do? What did they say they would do?

As you have proven, working 'in financial field' does not protect you from finger trouble.

    Whatever.

Who's managed to type in a wrong title and send money to an incorrect account?
I work in financial field and have done for many years.
You'd expect somebody like this to know better.

I can't solve the problem your error has created. I have, however, highlighted a method that you and others can use to avoid similar problems occurring in future.

    Good luck.

    Not in my experience.

I do this every time I set up a new payment. Never had any problems and I've made £1 test payments, followed by the "real" payment from current accounts with:
    Nationwide
    Co-op
    TSB
    Lloyds
    BoS
    Halifax
Santander (sometimes the payment is delayed for a day)

The £1 test payment isn't always a solution. Some fixed term accounts for example allow only one deposit.
