Fell over at petrol station

Hello,

need some advice please. I fell over coming out the of Shop in my local petrol station.
At the exit there are two sliding doors and tiled slight inclined pavement (downhill).
Since it had been raining it was wet (even though it's covered) and I slid and fell quite heavily.
Luckily I did not injure myself badly.

One of the attendants explained that they used to have a mat but it was removed as it was a trip hazard, so they have replaced it with anti slip !! tiles and they place a "wet floor" signs up even though there was no sign when I fell.

I dont believe and am the proof, that by putting a sign up it prevents people from slipping on wet tiles made much worse by the incline. Had I been a elderly - fail person I could have easily broken my hip / arm / leg as this is where all my dead weight went.

I have to questions:

On the fall I scraped my knee resulting in a hole on my trousers - how do I claim for this and how much do I claim for if I d'ont have a receipt?

I want to see an improvement on that exit. I have seen other places where they have tiles covered with black like sandpaper strips which would almost certainly gripped the shoes and avoided the fall.
Who do I approach for this to happen?

Like I said thank God I was not injured but when unexpected, a fall, does give you the fright of your life. And just because I didnt hurt myself it doesnt mean that no-one else in the future wont either.

Advice greatly appreciated.

As you had an accident ask to see the accident log that the staff will have had to fill in once you reported it to them.

Ask for the results of the investigation and what the recommendations are and when they will be implemented.

Ask them who you should sent the bill to for a new pair of trousers.

"I am very upset that by putting a sign up it would prevent from people slipping on wet tiles made much worse by the incline" A wet floor sign in no way prevents anything, especially if this is the only access/egress. You could ask them what the point of the sign is.

Do all the above in writing to the manager.

And it should have been reported logged and action taken to minimise the risk of an accident happening again.

And if it happens again and it's an elderly person who breaks a hip and end up in hospital for months, will you just tell them to get over it as well?

The question will arise. How many other people fell in the same spot that day?

Maybe it was down to the OP's footwear?

Rain and a greasy petrol station forecourt is always a risky place. Diesel mainly, People trying to get 60 litres into a 55 litre tank and wondering why its dripping onto the floor.

I agree, however that would be down to the petrol station to ensure the safety of the customers if the floor will become too slippy when wet.

They obviously have thought about H&S buy removing the matting and installing anti slip tiles, however it seems they need to look into whether the tiles are sufficient.

Take more care walking on wet surfaces. A thousand people would have walked on the same surface, did they all fall?

These days more and more stores will have ramps/inclined floors to comply with the disability act to make their premises accessible to the disabled.

Yeah steps are not allowed anymore so everywhere need ramps for access.

Our house is a fairly new build and no steps. A bit further down the street their houses are slightly lower and have water coming under the doors when raining.

    Silly health and safety rules.

    Silly health and safety rules.

Ramps have nothing to do with H & S. It is a legal requirement for businesses to make access for those in wheelchairs, so more and more stores are removing steps in favour of ramps/ flat access, but as a lot of older stores were built with a higher floor level to the street this leads to inclined floor ramps.

Stores remove door mats etc. due to 'ambulance chaser insurances' with their NO WIN NO CLAIM. you will be amazed at how many people will fake trips etc. to make a claim.
