Tipping in USA

Yes my husband and his friends were almost thrown out of a bar for not tipping. They got a right earful from the woman.0

I prefer the tipping culture because service in the US is far superior to here because they work for their tips.
I find the tipping culture quite annoying. An usher at the theatre walks you three metres to your row and expects a dollar or more. A driver on a shuttle bus displays huge signs about the importance of tips. And restaurants let you know exactly how many dollars to add to the bill if you'd like to leave a 25% tip. After all that I was glad to go to McDonalds and be left in peace.0 -
If anyone doesn't like the tipping culture, then maybe they shouldn't choose a country where this culture exits for their travels.
It doesn't make much sense to choose to go a place with a culture/well known practices that you find irritating and then moan about it!2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

I hear what you're saying, but I abhor discrimination based on sex race and sexuality; Should I never visit parts of the world where this discrimination occurs?
People are blowing tipping way out of proportion, and to suggest you shouldn't visit a country where you give thanks in payment because you refuse to be shaken down after a coffee is a little over the top.
Most of the countries I visit have traditions and cultures that I don't necessarily agree with, I just accept that that is their way of life - It doesn't have to be mine.0 -

Years ago someone on the dibb told a story about his friend they were holidaying with at WDW who came back to their villa and told them he had been barred from the Rose and Crown (the "British pub" in the EPCOT center).
It transpired this chap was sitting at the bar drinking and noticed another holidaymaker tipping the barman and told him that he didn't need to tip as it was British pub and you don't tip in them (obviously had never heard the phrase "and one for yourself"). The manager same over-politely told him to leave and to not come back.
When in Rome indeed.
I must admit that in the USA I tend to over-tip to distingush myself from my less aware fellow countrymen.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

.......er Yes. They're not getting any of my hard earned and money saved tourist funds.
So that's the Middle East, Northern Africa, Parts of Central Africa, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, parts of SE Asia and Indonesia and the Nusa Tenggara right down to Timor and the S Pacific Islands all ruled out then.
And a couple of Southern US states and every council estate in Britain ruled out0 -
If you are struggling with the tipping thinghy why not .......... Carry your own bags, use public transport, eat in fast food outlets and clean your own room ............ #justsaying !!!
Can I ask do people not tip here in the UK when you say go out for a meal ? #justasking !!!

Thanks.
I find the tipping business confusing too. So I am expected to tip the porter who helped with my lugguage but what about the concierge or receptionist who may have provided me with directions, recommendations or even booked something for me?
Customers (anywhere in the world) should never have to subsidise low salaries. Afterall, it's because of customers these people have a job in the first place.
But, when in Rome indeed.0 -

I will carry my own bags, I travel light anyway.
As for cleaning my own room, isn't the price inclusive of a maid? Afterall, if there was an option to take it out I would.
Yes people in the uk do tip, but only however much we want and we don't expect rude attitude for not doing so. Sometimes, service charge is already added to the bill, which you can ask for it to be removed.0
