I am not sure how appropriate it is but this did make me laugh.
    Hopefully not remotely appropriate.

    Not remotely relevant either.

But glad it aided an improvement to your day!

  • Not long back from the US. Some restaurants have started adding 18% to the check automatically. Don't hesitate to round it down if you need to!

I usually leave 15% for good service. No more.

    $2 for drinks
Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!

indeed...though with the subject matter I'm quite surprised that the period where some Americans owned slaves wasn't used instead...because, you know, that's just as appropriate a comparison.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

$2 per drink, thats a quarter of the UK minimum wage for one drink.

As pointed out previously, if a bartender serves just one drink per minute and you all tip $2 per drink that's $120 per hour in tips, across an 8hr shift that's $960 per day, or $4800 per week, which in UK terms is 3 grand per week - In tips, which by all accounts would put him in the top echelon of earners.

Are you starting to see just how ridiculous us Brits are yet when it comes to tipping in the US?

Yeah, although he could have shown his working out in the margin for maximum effect
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Thanks, I was going to throw a few logarithms in to make it look really slick, but then realised it might take away from the whole point of the post.

    Oh hang on ;)

Nothing has changed in the USA tip-wise since you were last there

Transfer driving a dollar per bag is acceptable.......eating out 20% -15% if you're stingy - bars dollar or two per drink.

No it isn't "as optional" as it is here -there is no minimum wage for waiters etc- it's very common they will be earning $2 or $3 per hour and their wage is made up with tips....It means service in the US is usually far better than here but if you walked out after a good meal with good service and didn't tip it isn't unknown for the waiter or manager to follow you out to demand to know why you haven't tipped. Entirely different culture to here.

This happened to us in Florida, a bit of confusion in which everyone thought someone else had tipped ended up with the restaurant owner following us shouting and bawling as to why we hadn't left anything
