The only negative to smart readers that I find is justified is that the energy companies would love to introduce peak and off-peak pricing, which would probably cause most people to pay more.

    That's the only one uh?

What about if they get the bill wrong?

You can argue all you like but when they have the ability to turn your power or gas off at the click of a mouse I bet you will only be able to argue after you have paid it.

Bottom line, its just another transfer of 'power' from the 'small guy'to the big corporation.
  • whot? they can just cut you off with a smart meter without visiting or writing to you?!
  • No one has to have one. Also some 80% of them are not working correctly and to be honest why bother - it limits you to some extent on providers too. I am not aware of any other energy coy installing them.
absolute rubbish , lies and propaganda, and to the OP, if you are that worried about radiation, keep away from bananas, Cornwall , etc plus mobiles and what you are using now to post your comment, assuming you ve got a wifi modem.
I ve been reading smart meters for BG now for nearly four years and faulty ones are very rare. I havent heard the general public in uproar about wifi signals from their phones, modems, tvs and cameras like we get from smart meters. The people who enjoy free electric and gas by bypassing will love you lot, you re doing thieves a big favour by refusing them and the MPs who started all this should be ashamed of themselves. In my view anyone refusing one should be cut off

My install failed (upon site inspection) because the meters are in a cellar and there is no adequate mobile signal to the SIMs. I can't believe that this issue isn't commonplace.
Mines in the cellar, works faultlessly. The latest Mk 2 BG smarts are supposed to be much better using making use of satellite roaming. some I have found to be a bit hit or miss when they are in a generally poor signal areas

Has anyone had these installed in there properties?
British gas has rung me and said they are wanting to put these into my house end of the month.

I'm a little bit worried as my wife has just had a new baby 5 days ago I've been googling and it's saying there are major risks with the amount of radiation coming out of these things?

    What do u guys reckon?

Just tell them you don't want one. They can't force you to have one, maybe later but not now. BG wanted to give me one. I said no thanks, it would be of no benefit to me. If you are unhappy with the idea, just say no, it's your choice.

No, no it will be fine, I am sure they will write to you first, after all the utilities never make mistakes, do they?

As they need no Warrant of Entry, just as BT pull the plug when the bill isn't paid without human intervention, we know how this is going to played out. As to mobile signals not working, no issue - GPRS is the preferred (cheapest) option, but there are a good number of wide area data networks (not cellular) that can be used as alternatives.

What you get will depend on the site survey, which is undertaken before the install.

They make mistakes with millions of customers each year!

Really? Does that mean Smart meters are a really dumb idea?

    Who'd a thunk it?
