Are you serious? How do you know it was hours?

I don't, I'm merely guessing and going by what a lot of teenagers are like.

Seems harsh to fire someone over 5 minutes. I've had some crap employers but not one of them would fire you for that! We all know what traffic, public transport etc are like. Thats why I think there was something else going on - especially as the op has also made it clear they have their own suspicions!

She is entitled to minimum wage at her rate of £3.72 including the "trail" day, they are no free days, she worked she is entitled to be paid for it.
If they do not pay her every penny, she can ask a representative to issue a county court claim or wait until she is 18 and do it herself.
    Be happy...;)

Within the first few weeks 5 minutes is 4 minutes more than it'd take to fire someone -

Proof that some people should not be given authority. :(

People get fired cause the boss can fire you, its that simple.

At my old place you would be for the high jump if 5 mins late regardless of reason.

    What was the contractual notice?

To terminate immediately it would need to be gross misconduct.

Was the lateness discussed during the day

Of course, she was not yet entitled to written particulars of employment which would spell those out. That written information is due within two months of the start of employment.

Unless she had received such information which gave longer notice periods than statutory, she was not entitled in law to any notice as she had not worked for them for a month.

"Trial" periods do not have to be paid if it was agreed beforehand that it was, if you like, simply an extension of the interview.

ETA - In relation to age of the employee - there is no difference to the right to be paid for hours worked or notice due.

Not in a probationary period, it wouldn't.

She was late, she was fired. Seems fair enough to me.

A probationary period now is 2 years from the start of employment no matter what any contract says as you can be let go if you do not have 2 years under your belt.

I don't see why - unless there is a genuine reason (and "the bus was late" isn't a genuine reason) then there's no excuse for being late. Being on time is an absolute must, failing to do that isn't acceptable when there's no valid reason for being late - for example freak weather conditions or a mode of transport suffering mechanical failure. Missing a bus which will get you to work on time just shows a lack of planning & ability to allow for contingency!

The worst ones are those on 25p an hour more for the task of been the "supervisor" it goes straight to their heads, the reason why they are the supervisor is they are the only one who has been that long.

Everyone else left long ago and got a better job....:rotfl:
