Do I actually NEED a landline?

I think I'll have to use YouTube very sparingly if I go ahead with this. It's definitely not the be-all-and-end-all for me though, I could cope without it. Thanks for the stats, that's interesting to know.1

If internet suppliers sold cars, they would make you buy a horse with every car.
Why can they not get it in to their heads.
We do not want a ruddy phone package, this is 2013.
Just sell ruddy broadband down the line.Be happy...;)1 -

Seriously? Ok, just as an example, a 30 minute video I downloaded from youtube totals 824mb in size.
Ok its 720p, so slightly higher resolution than usual, but you get the point. One video.
n.b. you're paying too much for your line rental, and BT is just about the most expensive out there. I have Sky for line rental as well as BB which is not only cheaper but I threaten to leave every 6 months or so and they half my line rental for the next 6 months. BT don't do haggling last time I tried, which is one reason why i quit the moneygrubbing b'stards, and I havn't regretted it one iota.1 -
We have tried doing without a landline and just used mobiles and laptop dongles for a while but network problems (signal being cut off etc) brought us back to having a landline again.
And with dongles/mobiles you soon get through £15 in data charges so I would shop around for a good deal for a landline/broadband contract from a single supplier. My son chose EE as he was already a T Mobile customer so he got a discount from them.
You might also save on your PAYG mobile by looking at Sainsburys (Vodafone) or Asda (EE soon) as they do 8p a minute and 4p a text as do Tesco with the Tesco Lite tariff (O2). I think that beats O2's own prices.1 -

The best way to do it,in my opinion, is to download all the You Tube clips that you regularly watch while you're on BT.
I have Firefox as my browser and use Download Helper to get all the videos I like. I'm sure other browsers have a similar add-on.

Then, when you kick BT into touch you won't have to use You Tube very much because you'll already have all your favourite clips on your computer.1 -
A genuine thank you to everyone who has commented, I'm certainly getting a lot of food for thought here.
I think I'll give it a go without my landline, it's not like it's an irreversible decision after all. I am concerned about the comment regarding the possibility of a poor connection when using a mobile for internet use, so I will look into this a little bit more.

OP, if you want to replace landline/line rental and broadband and mobile phone with one bill, the only realistic solution is one with a high or unlimited data allowance, and you'd be hard-pressed to beat 3's unlimited offer at £15 a month, so long as coverage in your area is satisfactory (note you're currently paying just under £30 a month).
Even if you looked at other routes, such as talktalk with value line rental and no calls, and augmenting this with a free or near-free mobile phone contract, you'd still be in the £15/month region anyway.1
