Leaving Sky

Options
Just got off the phone to Sky.

I currently have the entertainment extra tv package, phone and broadband with those guys. I pay £49 a month.

When I said I wanted the lot cancelling, the customer service advisor in a way tried to scaremonger into stopping me from cancelling. He mentioned how Sky were the cheapest for the bundle packages, how having the phone line reconnected could be awkward and the fact that I'd have a new phone number if I deactivated the phone line at a future date.

I pushed on with the cancellation and was made no offer to continue using Sky. Quite disappointing really so I'm now looking for other providers of phone, broadband and tv services.

Cheers

Disappointed in what way? You asked to cancel and you've cancel. I would never be disappointed if customer services actually did what I asked!

As for scaremongering, I don't see how.

  • I did exactly the same 2 wks ago. I got no offer and they tried to tell me the offers for other providers will end after certain amount of time blah blah..... I went ahead and cancelled, they gave me a switch off date, my husband was not amused (sky sports and HD addict lol) anyway they rang me a week later and offered me our whole package half price for 6 mths and free broadband for 9 mths so hang in there and wait for that phone call. When they ask your reasons for cancelling stick to the I can't afford it, xmas coming up etc etc. I didn't mention other TV providers as I think they cannot offer you anything based on that reason, just say you are struggling to afford it and thought what the hell, you may as well cancel.

Just the same, only with less channel choice. All providers charge far too much...

@hatewashingmachines sounds like you got a good deal there. If I were offered something similar I'd probably stay.

@cifpower you're missing the point. They weren't even interested in keeping my custom. They offered me nothing to stay and were happy to disconnect. As for the scaremongering, it blatantly was, the chap on the phone was making it sound like my life would be hell without Sky tv, broadband and phone line and even went as far as naming other providers as being terrible - quite surprising considering the phone call is supposed to be recorded.

We've been with Sky for TV for years and about two years ago added in phone and broadband. With HD we've been paying a silly amount per month so approached Sky two weeks ago to see if anything could be done to cancel movies/sports or reduce our monthly cost through an offer but no interest from sky in helping. Rang up last night and asked to cancel, best offer they made was around a 25% reduction, bearing in mind with BT offer & quidco rate i can save something like 66% i expected a bigger push from sky to keep us but no.

So unless we get a call from sky in the next 48 hours with a cracking offer its new provider time!
  • You get the best deals if you actually leave believe me, we're just coming to the end of 10 months totally free for everything (no HD mind you) but don't halfhearted expect them to call just because you've given notice.

We managed to live without it for 3 months (after 13 years) and to be honest you don't miss it.

Have just given notice again as the offer wasn't good enough to come back (no more free period alas) but it will be, but I'm happy to wait for that to come from them.

I had to cancel my sky TV package in August as things were tight. I was in the process of moving house (to save money) but my move date kept getting put back.
I rang sky and the assistant offered to give me sky TV totally free for one month to help me until I moved. I had to decline as my move date could have been put back again and I would still need to pay in full again after that (or at least for the 30 day notice period) My point here is that they were extremely helpful and understanding.

I then moved and checked the cost of Virgin against sky. Virgin was already connected in my new house and was a couple of pound dearer than sky for exactly the same package. I rang sky as I was just going to go with them anyway to save that couple of pound(!) and I got through to the wrong department first of all, but the assistant told me that they sometimes offered 25% or 50% off for re-connections and to make sure I asked if I wasn't offered it. I wasn't offered it at first... I asked... I got!!! Brilliant!!
So if you are looking for a better deal with sky, and don't feel you are being offered one - just ask. Good luck!
