Alas that doesn't help the OP. 5w30 should be just the trick for a vvti engine. Is it possible the engine flush has caused this problem? I agree, manufacturers dont specify it - it's just a money spinner for the garage.

when a car goes out of warranty usausally owners will not use dealer service from then on either. They will use indies who don't chance your paperwork for cambelt service records. In fact I bought a car that had cambelt due and the last service invoice (from previous owner) stated clearly "check your service log for timing belt service, as it has not been inspected and cannot be liable for damages cause by it"

I took that to mean the garage didn't bother to check the book or knows it's overdue and covering their backs.
