Estate with a set of winter tires or something like senic/espace/cmax varity. My guess by the fact your using a Clio that your don't really need a 4*4 with it's associated costs


What kind of dogs are we talking about as well great Danes or little Scotty dogs?

Has the Clio been a sack of ***** and that's why you fancy a Toyota? If you fancy a Rav4 then get one and don't let the killjoys put you off.

Nevertheless, if you've got your heart set on a Toyota but you decide the Rav4 is going to be too costly to run then a Yaris Verso or Corolla Verso may fit the bill, depending on size of dogs and child!

I had a Toyota Rav 4 for 15 years. It was the best car I ever had. Never went wrong. Always drove through snow and ice perfectly without sliding.

It eventually died from a head gasket going after 250,000 miles. I had to buy a smaller car to run after that as I needed to reduce expenditure. The RAV4 did 35mpg petrol while my new car, a Yaris, does nearer 60.

The RAV4 was nice and powerful but the Yaris struggles up hills and the suspension in the Yaris can't cope with potholed tracks that the RAV easily took in its stride. I could load the RAV up with sacks of animal feed but the Yaris can't cope with being loaded too much.

I miss my RAV every day and if I had the money again, I'd go for a RAV4.

I had a 53 plate Rav4 and it was so good I kept it for 8 years. Great, reliable car and I would recommend. Averaged 40mpg on the 2ltr Diesel engine. In the region of £240 annual road tax. Terrific winter driving with the four wheel drive. Good driving position and higher than a standard car.

My wife has a mk3 Clio dci and i would suspect you would nearly double your running costs unless you planned budget well.

For example tyres are a big expense on these vehicles compared to your Clio.

Look into used tyres. A new Goodyear Wrangler for my Pathfinder is around £160, an almost new part worn is around the £60/70 mark fitted and balanced.

Most important thing on a vehicle is regular oil and filter changes, if you have a relative to help then do those yourself and keep an eye on brakes etc and get them dine when needed. Not sure if the Rav4 has a cambelt or camchain however.

Also consider a Honda CR-V. Or perhaps a Subaru Impreza estate or Forester, maybe even a Legacy.

Not sure of your budget however but lots of those around under £5k, though you might have to accept high mileage.
