any evidence for that?
What is it you want evidence for?
That the utility industry was sold in the the mid 1980s?
The party in power that sold the utility industries?
That utility prices are higher?
That companies are driven by profit?
Shareholders want the companies that they hold shares in to make a profit?0 -

The issue is would prices be lower if the government ran the energy industry rather than private enterprise?
Is profit a bad thing? would you like it banned?
Should the government provide other services or only the energy sector?0 -
I think so. The government would try and subsidise it I imagine. PLCs are driven by profit, profit is usually generated by higher prices and lower margins or both hence higher utility prices like now.The issue is would prices be lower if the government ran the energy industry rather than private enterprise?
Profit is not a bad thing. No of course not, I want my dividends being paid.Is profit a bad thing? would you like it banned?
I'm not sure. I don't think government controlled services in the UK are a bad thing but not sure it's a good thing either.Should the government provide other services or only the energy sector?0 -

profit is not bad
government control is either good or bad0 -
Your assumptions are terrible if not very wrong.
I don't have a problem with high prices hence me not thinking profit is bad.
oh I see
I thought that this had a small air of disapproval: but nice to be wrongHigher utility prices is what you get for selling the industry to shareholders who are driven by profit.
Remind me again please, was it a Labour government that did that?0 -
No disapproval about profit and high prices (I'd obviously want to pay less) but if you buy shares in Centrica and enjoy their dividends you can't really complain about high gas prices.oh I see

The disapproval was the taking of a partisan position blaming one political party for high utility prices without looking at how it started.0 -
